Hi All,
Avid lurker and first time poster. My Cayman GTS arrived US (Davisville) this morning and I am anxiously awaiting delivery and pick-up at the dealer soon. Besides all the anxiety I've developed by watching YT videos about how bad the exhaust note is, I'm now second guessing my decision to not go with the smoking package. I will confess my ignorance as I didn't do the appropriate due diligence. You see...I don't smoke and I hate the smell of smoke so I obviously didn't need the smoking package?! As it turns out, it seems like I should have gotten the smoking package because it gives the center console a cleaner look and adds a 12v outlet, correct?
Anyway, I guess my question is - what does one use the center cubby for? Is it big enough to hold an iPhone? Any cool aftermarket products that could make it more useful than a hole to collect "stuff"?
Please don't tell me it's great for coins. I hate loose change!
Thanks!

Well the smoking package, for me, is a must have for a few reasons one is the esthetics and the other it can be used with a Porsche battery tender to keep the battery charged without having to go under the hood. That is particularly important on extended vacations and it makes keeping the battery properly charged a breeze.
Unfortunately, it is way to small for an iPhone even the 5 series, and it can be used, and I hate to say this, for loose change. I am not aware of any aftermarket products that are available for the small center cup but maybe others on this forum have creative suggestions.
One story I will relate to you was I was thinking about purchasing a GT4 that did not come equipped with a smoking package and I contacted several dealerships to see if they could retro-fit the smoking package and they either said it could not be done or they said they would get back to me (but they never did).

The tray is a harder plastic so I wouldn't use it for change unless you put something under the change to dampen the sound. The tray is too small for anything substantial like a cell phone. I put a microfiber cloth in the tray so I have it handy to wipe the touch screen.

I can help solve your dilemma! I picked up my Cayman just last week. I'll give you my base Cayman (which I personally had built and includes the smoking package), which is already here, and I'll take your GTS :D Of course I'll still make the payment on my base model, and you continue to make the payment on the GTS. See? Problem solved... ;)

I am not a smoker and hate the smell of it, but I did intentionally order the smoker's package for the extra power outlet and tidy looking lid to cover the hole. Because it's hard plastic, I hate placing change in it and have thought about how nice it would have been to not have it. But, to Porsche2018's comment about ease of maintaining the batter, I am glad I have the extra outlet.

I think I found the perfect use for this little cubby today! It happens to be the perfect size for a to-go macchiato cup!
2oz espresso + 2oz frothed milk in a tiny 4oz cup dropped right in and didn't budge or spill while driving.

BTW this drink was super delicious - highly recommend Vigilante Coffee in Hyattsville, MD if you're in the area.

Finally, someone with a good idea of how to use the cubby.
I have the smokers package and sort of wish I didn't. I don't think it's ever been open, and having it just for the cover seems wrong. I'd rather have another place to put stuff, even if it is small.

Well, this is weak, but it is a use. I have a dash cam and it uses micro SD cards, so every so often, or after a really interesting drive, I need to exchange the cards. The little cubby is the perfect, handy place to hold the SD card case for the exchange. Also, if you fill up your jukebox, you could use it to carry SDs of your music library. Another idea: if you are already chunky like I am, you shouldn't take whole bags of peanut M&Ms with you on short drives. However, you could fill the cubby with loose M&Ms and the cubby structure will limit how many you can remove at any moment.

Few know this but Starbucks also has a "short" cup that is smaller than their "tall" / smallest of their classic three sizes. Maybe that would fit as well? It's 8oz I think vs 12oz / tall.

I use my cubby to collect dust between interior cleaning sessions. I thought about swapping it out for the ashtray and lid when I installed my short shifter, but in the end decided that both spaces are too small to be useful.

Also, there's an older thread on here somewhere that explains which option combinations put 12 volt receptacles where. With mine, I just plug my tender into the plug in the armrest.

I keep a garage alarm fob in there. I did not have the package on my 981 so I specified it on my 982 because I think it looks sleeker and I wanted the extra power source. I also keep a micro sd card in there.

All it is good for is collecting dust. Definitely would have ordered the smokers package just to get the cover.

Wonder if I can find someone to make a 3D printed cover that would at least cover the opening and clean up the look?
