It’s officially official.
Stuttgart. Porsche is adding two distinctly sporty and high specification models to its mid-engine sports car range: the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0. The new two-seaters are powered by a 294 kW (400 PS) four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, similar to that used in the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4. When combined with the manual six-speed transmission and sports exhaust system, this results in exceptional power delivery and a particularly rewarding driving experience. It achieves the sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293 km/h. Thanks to standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, as well as a 20 millimetre lower ride height and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential, the new generation of GTS achieves a remarkable balancing act between dynamic handling and everyday comfort. The standard Sport Chrono package with upgraded Porsche Track Precision App also emphasises the athletic character of the mid-engine sports cars. Black contrasting design elements and a dark Alcantara® interior create highlights typical of GTS models.

"It achieves the sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293 km/h."
So nearly equally speedy.

"Adaptive cylinder control that alternately switches off one of the two cylinder banks at low loads"
So, similar enough to a 4 cylinder.

"also enjoys the acoustic advantages of the rich six-cylinder boxer engine sound"
WHATEVER

I will be happily proceeding w/ my 718 Cayman S order that freezes at EOM. :D The fat low-end torque will make it ideal – for my personal purposes of weekend drives and road trips.

Hugh Laurie (of House and other shows) has a jazz / blues cover album "Let Them Talk", with an eponymous track that begins: "Let them talk if they want to, talk don't bother me... I want the whole wide world to know: I love you so..."

Not sure where you’re getting that from. It’s estimated at 4.5 seconds 0-62 and on the German page for the current 2.5 GTS in manual it’s rated at 4.9. I’m not sure why the German versions are rated at that compared to the US ones, but either way it looks like they’re saying this new one is faster.

So their announcement proclaims its slower than the 2.5 F4?
My first thought when reading that press release was: "ok, so it's got similar performance to a 718S" :p I think current 718GTS owners need not fret ;) I think my base 718 Boxster with an upcoming APR tune will continue to thrill and satisfy for years to come ?

What's the lag time for those 2 cylinders to kick back in? Instantaneous? Small delay?
Not that I think it matters, but they will be instantly there as that cylinder is in the position to charge and fire.

The cylinder deactivation only happens under light load, they're not going to be cutting out while you are pushing it.

Interesting, no mention of a PDK...

Geeez, if I didn't know better I would say that is some definite anti-F6 sentiments in the crowd...

You know, I accept the T4 for what it is as I do the F6, different cars for different people, it would be sad not to have a choice!
I agree, choices are good! I don't think it's as much a case of anti-F6 as it is T4 owners watching their cars getting blasted for years by the "it sounds like crap" crowd ...... the vast majority of whom have never driven one. Then when Porsche appears to have possibly caved to the criticism and moved back to a six in the cars, it just rubs the T4 owners the wrong way ........... leads to some touché retorts. Had the T4 not been so bashed by many, I'm sure there would be much less sensitivity to the new six. YMMV

Totally underwhelming announcement. The sound in their video clip sucks. I have no doubt that the aftermarket will eventually make the new F6 engine sound good though. I can’t wait for the first head to head reviews.

Bet the media sycophants swear it sounds better before the aftermarket makes that a reality...?
