Or is one even necessary? I'd be a willing guinea pig to do some investigative disassembly as my 718 is probably one of the higher mileage ones here at 42k miles. Just need to know what should be examined for excessive oil buildup; intake throttle body?

Sorry to bring up an old post, but all DI engine will have carbon build up on the inlet valves and excess oil in the intake manifold. So an oil catch can will help reduce but not eliminate the build up.

Most Porsches, including the 718 have an air oil separator (AOS). More sophisticated than standard PCVs, but not fool proof. Older Porsches were known to smoke excessively when these fail, I haven't heard of any AOS failures on this platform.

Actually, mine did about a month after I bought my Cayman...I got a check engine light, and the code confirmed it was the AOS. I'm still under warranty, so I brought it to the dealership...they replaced the diaphragm (I think) in the AOC and it's been great ever since.

Just as a point of reference for the OP, an air-oil separator is one step better than an oil catch can. Catch cans just fill up and you have to manually drain them. AOS's let the oil drain back to the sump...but their function is the same as a Catch Can.
