I don't track my car, so maybe this isn't relevant to you, but I have owned both a 718 base and an S and I have never seen pressure like that. Might be time to take it to the dealer. Could just be the gauge. On another note, I really appreciate the info on my Porsche's LED screen.

As I recall, this question came up maybe six months ago. Everyone who responded, including me, said yes, the oil pressure does go up into the red under high revs. Oil pressure will be higher when the oil is cold, of course. You want to let the engine warm before pushing it too hard anyway. The consensus was that it's okay because you aren't running like that all the time. If it stayed up there all the time it might indicate a problem, perhaps a blocked oil line.

Pretty sure mine goes into the red too when pushing it hard. It always comes back down once you back off the throttle (as it should). If it's pinned in the red area then you've got a problem.

I'll try to remember to take a look at the actual PSI shown next time.

I was wrong in my previous post. Usually I never look at the oil pressure when I am winding it up, I look at the road. Well, today I wound it up in second and the pressure went up the the right edge of the gauge and dropped right back to normal after I upshifted to sixth and at 2000 rpm.

Thanks guys. My dealer had it for two days, and they said it’s “normal”, because two of the 718 Ss they have on the lot did the same. I’m going to follow up with Porsche. It has gone as high as 76 PSI, at 4500 RPM, with a fully warmed up engine. I never go over 3K RPM, before the engine oil is up to temp.

Did it go into the red, or just the far edge of the white zone. What was the max PSI seen?

I’ve seen 72 PSI on mine (fully warmed up), frequently in the red, and dealer swears it’s “normal.” Still makes me nervous 😬

Just to add to my post above.—
I went out for a spirited ride and did some experimenting. With the foot hard on the gas, in second or third gear, going up a steep hill, I was able to get the oil pressure up to the red zone. How far up? Don't know exactly, the speed was getting well into "lose licence" territory and there was a 50 kph corner rapidly approaching, but I think I saw 4.8 bar (69 psi). As soon as I let the throttle off the pressure dropped way back down.

Thanks all! I'm going to nag Porsche until they agree to re-calibrate the oil pressure gauges in the 982. During normal operation, no gauge on a car should be going into the red zone.

My Cayman S does the same thing, oil pressure rises into the red at high revs. I asked my Porsche service advisor about this just the other day and he said 'no one has ever mentioned that to me before'. So far, everything I've read online indicates this is 'normal'.

Mine tops out at 68psi. Top of the range, but not in red I believe.
Fully warm, S, Pdk in second.
2018 with 8k miles.
Dealer fill, so I presume 0-40 oil.
Service done before I got it to ask/check. 2k miles on the oil.

Totally agree!

Our oil pressure gauges are either inaccurate, or worse, accurate and actual oil pressure too high...thus, endangering our mechanicals.

Fairly certain Porsche won’t resolve this issue in my lifetime. Fortunately I have four more years of CPO warranty...then perhaps it’s time for a 458. Regardless, mid engine is the bomb!

Hey guys,

Just checking you realise what the oil pressure means? As in the enemy is low oil pressure... not high oil pressure.

Admittedly my experience in such matters is in Subarus and there may be something different in the 718. But........Low oil pressure means not enough pressure to support bearings and prevent bearing contact. It can be a sign that bearing damage is already present and clearances are high due to bearing wear (so oil can flow to low pressure side more easily). Typically an engine oil pump has a relief valve to prevent high oil pressure that is spring operated. Without it the pressure would go much higher and could blow out seals etc. It is what sets the pressure at high RPM. Malfunctioning of this valve is unlikely. It would have a range of operation and would be effected by oil viscosity and temperature (so you get higher pressure when cold thick oil is flowing). If it stuck closed you would see >100psi easily. It seems Porsche should have given the guage more range and shifted the red region, but I personally would be happy to see the pressure tickling the high end rather than the low.
