Is it possible to open the top with just the key?

Not usually in the USA, but elsewhere--yes.
Just press and hold beyond the lock/unlock time and see what happens. Unlock=top down, lock=windows and top up.

There is a 3rd party option, or hints that it should be software programmable.

It is possible here. Just press the unlock button and keep it held down until the roof is fully lowered.

Do the same with the lock button to raise the roof.

In the US, you need to buy and install a third-party device that provides remote capability. The one I have is SmartTOP, which is described here.

i installed the SmartTop and i love it. i routinely lower the top as i walk to the car. very easy to install and can be easily removed.

I recently installed a SmartTop module (same one @AviBen linked to). I can now via the remote have the top lowered, windows lowered, and fully down before I reach my car. Same for closing everything up when I exit my car. Even better is the one touch/tap top operation. No more having to hold the open or close button while the top is moving.
This is a great option for USA folks who don't have the extended remote functions on our cars that our friends across the various ponds do.

The installation instructions on the SmartTop module are very good, you just need to take your time and IMHO triple check everything. Took me about an hour moving real slow validating everything (and umm, disassembling the Continental electronics module for the top because I was curious...). FWIW, while you're installing the SmartTop module, it's a great time to fully remove the soundaktor too. ~2lbs weight savings diet, so yes, I can have that burrito today and still have the same performance as yesterday.

Yes, in the UK as described above. Can be opened and closed whilst driving, up to around 40mph iiirc.

SmartTop was an amazing upgrade (and not v/ hard to install). Aside from using the key to raise / lower the roof (with or without the windows), it also makes the operation "one touch" using the regular controls inside. If you drive a manual, this lets you set the top in motion and frees your hand up to shift as you drive away (say when the light turns green, so you're not holding up traffic). Shame that functionality isn't stock in the US.
