Looking at Two Differrent 2018 Cayman S cars with mostly the same options. Difference are: Car 1...multifunction steering wheel, sports Chrono, sports exhaust, tinted tail lights. Car 2...non of those but has Porsche connect plus with Apple play. Car 1 about $5k more. Suggestions or comments?

Sport exhaust isn't standard until 2019, someone here will know the current cost - I think about $1500 - 2000. The base price of the 19's has gone up to partially accommodate this.

If planning any track/performance driving, I would get the Sport Chrono. It's probably overkill for everyday driving. It's the only option I wish I had gotten, but I bought a pre-existing car off the lot and it was my first Porsche.

There's no right answer to your question - that's why the cars are sold option by option. Any off the lot car will usually be plus/minus one or two options that you want/don't want.Tech/stereo are important to some people, creature comforts to others, performance to others, cosmetics to others and a blend of these for everyone. No one can make this decision for you.

What @ldamelio said: PSE isn't standard until 2019. These are 2018 cars.
@Straugr (OP): $5k difference seems to be a lot between Car A and Car B. Here's why:

- Car B's Porsche Connect Plus includes OEM navigation and a built-in WiFi hotspot and is roughly a $3,300 option over regular Porsche Connect. Meanwhile:
- Car A's big options are PSE (@ $2,400) and Sport Chrono (@ $1,900). That's only a $1k difference, plus a few hundred for the other two options that car has.

My thoughts:
- OP, you need to let us know if these cars have PDK or not because Sport Chrono is really only worth it on a PDK car.
- You also need to figure out what other options Car A has that Car B doesn't. The difference in price is too great. Is mileage roughly the same on both cars?
- Car A is plainly outfitted as a modest driver's car. Car B is a stripper for a techie. Which do you value? Choose the one that you value more.

Disagree that Sport Chrono is only really worth it on a PDK car. Yes you get launch control and a quicker shifting map plus the 'boost' button, but with a manual transmission you get rev matching and it is cheaper than on a PDK equipped car.

Anyway just my two cents worth, which are probably irrelevant to the conversation as i'm guessing the OP is looking at PDK equipped cars.

I believe you also get the dynamic transmission mounts on a PDK car with Sport Chrono.

Let's just say that the Sport Chrono package has more value in a car with a PDK than in one with a manual. Agreed?

If that is the case I would probably agree with you but i'm pretty sure you get the dynamic transmission mounts when specifying Sport Chrono with a manual gearbox.

As far as I know Sport Chrono gives you three additional functions with a PDK transmission:

1. Launch Control - how often do PDK drivers use this?
2. Quicker shift times - not applicable to a manual transmission
3. Sport Response - for max response for 20 secs (faster build-up of boost pressure & 'special' gearshift map). I've tried this and didn't really have an opinion either way; again it is largely not applicable if you have a manual gearbox.

So does the extra cost for SC on a PDK vs SC on a Manual transmission make it better value? In my opinion, no it doesn't, but of course others may see it differently.

I stand corrected. Here's the breakdown from Porsche's website.

And back when I ordered my 2018, I don't remember a price difference for Sport Chrono between PDK and a manual. Can anyone confirm this?

Everything happens in the configurator, where the price for SC changes depending on whether you have manual (NZ$3,800) or PDK (NZ$4,790) selected. They don't highlight the price change though.

I'm new here, hi! I bought my 2018 718 Cayman at the end of 2017 and it has the Porsche Connect Plus with Apple Car play. If I had to chose between that and my heated multi-function steering wheel and sport chrono, I'm not choosing Porsche Connect. Mine came with all of those things, so it was easy for me. But the Porsche Connect was a pain in the butt to set up. I don't know that I'd go through all that again. I had to create 2 different user accounts with Porsche, they authorized the VIN of the car to make sure I really bought it, then I had to take it to the dealer with a code for them to activate in the car. Then I had to activate it via an app on my phone, and the code was like 20 characters that I couldn't copy/paste into the app. The whole process took almost 2 weeks.

The embedded SIM is with AT&T, which I'm not a fan of so didn't activate. I haven't tried a SIM from my carrier yet to see how well that part functions.

I just couldn't let the debate continue without disclosing what a pain all of that was, in case it influences a decision. :)

If the OP does not have an iPhone the Porsche Connect will not mean as much because it contains Apple CarPlay. I do not believe it is compatible with Android phones.

First: welcome to the forum.

Now ... All that is par for the automotive-world course with the connectivity functions that Porsche Connect Plus has -- plus, you didn't mention that the package includes OEM nav, which is not available separately from the factory. That alone is worth at least $1.5k of the option price.

To each their own, of course. But don't poo-poo a quite use-able option just because you have predilections against AT&T. The same system has to be set up the same way in Audis and (I suspect) higher-line VWs, which use the same software/hardware package that PCM4 represents.
@OldJedi is correct when he says that the package loses utility if you're not an iOS user. Rumor has it, though, that Android Auto is coming to PCM4 for the 2019 model year.
