Last week my son and I picked up my new 718 Cayman at the Atlanta PEC. It was a great experience - spent 1/2 hour in a simulator and 1 1/2 hours on the tracks, and had a very nice `reveal' of the car. The configuration is the base model in white with base seats (mechanical fore-aft and up-down, no lumbar support), manual transmission, red/black interior, lane change assist, dynamic light system, seat ventilation, and active suspension.
I ordered the car June 2, and delivery was October 10. The PEC delivery added about 4 weeks of waiting, but it was worth it. The car was built in Osnabruck, it shipped from Emden to Jacksonville (just before hurricane Irma hit), it rode out Maria safely, and Nate went west of Atlanta a few days before the delivery. We lucked out with perfect weather for getting the car home.
To get home we drove the car from Atlanta across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, a corner of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona in six days - 2400 miles with average speed of 60 mph and mileage of 32 mpg - staying off freeways as much as possible. The car's performance was flawless.
We kept revs under 4000 rpm (mostly) and did lots of gear changes on the trip...it seems to be well broken in. I like the sound of the engine, in spite of complaints from some owners of older flat 6's. From what I see on you tube, the new one sounds like the original 718 from 1960. Fine with me - this whole thing is about retro in a modern vehicle anyway. The engine noise was pleasant in town and at 100 mph (that's 20 over in Utah... no jail time risked), and the engine makes good sounds when accelerating. The seats are very comfortable - with added lumbar support from a rolled pair of socks set between the spine and the seat. Fit and finish are outstanding, as expected.
Overall, the delivery, the 718, and the trip were excellent - the weather was perfect, and had lots of interesting roads to drive, especially in Colorado.
