I read that Porsche is temporarily halting sales of their cars in Europe due to emissions standards changing and that effecting their cars.

Cane anyone in Europe comment on this? Does that means you can't buy a Porsche in Europe at this time? How long does this go on for? How can Porsche afford to do this?

Is this only effecting Porsche, or are other car manufacturers taking the same steps?

Does this mean US orders may be delivered ahead of schedule? I have a 2019 BGTS with an estimated September delivery. I'd love for them to finish the build before the summer shutdown and get it on a boat for an August delivery :)

According to this article, other manufacturers are doing the same. https://www.teslarati.com/porsche-stops-eu-sales-emissions-wltp-compliance/

Maybe; this may be true-true and unrelated but my build date recently moved from 27 to 13 July.
I just spoke with my dealer and mine did too (27->13)!

You would think that Porsche knew about these new emission standards for some time now and that they would have been ready with cars that meet them.

They have to rework the exhaust system to fit petrol particulate filters. This requires a redesign of the exhaust system plus various sensors etc. They them have to redesign the production line to make it work, then build the line and then start production again.

Hmmmmmmm so that's why I received a two week bump up of my Porsche. I wonder what if any impact this modification will have on performance.

They are specifically talking about Europe deliveries only (at least for the time being).
Here is the official press statement from Porsche on this: https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/company/porsche-sale-new-vehicles-europe-15574.html

I don't think they are touching the GT cars yet at all. If you get yours this year you'll be fine. The turbo cars they probably just up the boost to compensate for the loss of HP.

Actually I wonder if they'll even install the new filter hardware in any cars delivered outside Europe? Why would they? Cheaper for them not to if they don't have to...

It's interesting that the doc only talks about Cayman and Cayman GTS...it's like the S doesn't exist to them. :(
I wouldn't read too much into that. They just have to start transitioning the model line somewhere. It's actually quite surprising that they are prioritizing the 718 (with two trims) over the 911 (only GTS trim). Maybe the 911 will be discontinued soon...? :D;)
I find this interesting:
There are a number of challenges which have contributed to the delay: In accordance with the new legislation, vehicle manufacturers will in future have to specify individual consumption data, taking into account the individual vehicle equipment. Calculating this consumption data requires a wide variety of measurements.
This requirement has to be an absolute nightmare for a bespoke manufacturer like Porsche.

The question is will they respond by doing what most others do, grouping options into packages that make the task more manageable, or maintain the status quo and up the prices to reflect the increased hassle of all the infinite possibilities. One wonders how Mini, who prides itself on its millions of possibilities, is responding to this.

This is a ridiculous requirement. So bureaucratic. Just get an approximation of the fuel consumption across the range and be done with it. Who cares if one car makes an extra gram or particulate exhaust one way or the other. This will just end up with either fewer choices for the buyer, or a more expensive car for the buyer.

I was wondering why the UK Porsche configurator had all the Porsche models as "unavailable - contact dealer". I hadn't realised that the EU had mandated this new petrol particulate filter for direct injection engines by coming September - that's quick work for the EU. If it's anything like the diesel particulate filter it'll sap power, put up fuel consumption, cost a lot of money and be prone to getting blocked. Still it is in a good cause.

If these EU bureaucrats had their way completely, we'd all still be on horseback but with an "kakalitic" converter attached to the rear.;)
