Has anyone established beyond doubt any quality difference to the hyper expensive premium paints like carmine red (mine), miami blue, etc. I notice that GT silver metallic used to be a premium but now where it belongs in the metallic section. Are these premium solid colours the same paint as the no-cost solid colour options, just at a premium for exclusivity. Seems to me there are more carmine red on the road now than guards red! Be nice to think the paint finish was better, not just the colour difference.

The only purpose for the premium paints is to separate us poor souls from more of our money. "Premium" paints are rotated through the years - as you said, the "non-premium" silver GT on my 718BS used to be premium. I've owned premium and non-premium GT silver and there is no discernible difference.

With exception of few Porsche exclusive colors they are all the same quality. GT silver is GT silver. Doesn't matter if it cost you $500 or $3000. Black and white is included and they should not even charge extra for metallic. It's just done because they can.
That being said the exclusive colors like aforementioned liquid metal or python green are more premium and substantially more difficult to apply. 9-10 coats of paint. 3-4 coats of clear. Using magnets to align the metal flakes just right after each coat application. That is difficult and expensive to do. Not $60K (liquid metal) or $100K (python green) difficult though of course.

So there's not more pigment or extra layers or more difficult to apply to carmine red / Miami blue / lava orange, etc vis-à-vis guards red, racing yellow, etc? Always fascinates me that on a £65K+ car, they say you need to pay extra for the bodycare treatment, nano or ceramic technology, etc. Even worse, if I was buying a £150K 911, I'd expect the paintwork to be the best finish available!
