Just a note in the `general paranoia' area. I got a letter from my insurance co. saying I had driven my 718C too much last year! The insurance policy has been updated now, as it would naturally have been on semi-annual renewal, but the point is that the only entity having my mileage info is Porsche. I learned that Porsche shares information, such as who I am, mileage at service visits, repairs, damage, etc., through vendor reports. I expect that Porsche has monetized our personal information, but I don't remember seeing a disclosure about this or how else Porsche shares/sells information. The Porsche https://www.porsche.com/usa/privacy-policy/ is not clear (to me - I am not a lawyer) on this issue. In addition, my car came with a bump antenna, but I had not ordered any online services, Sirius or any nav equipment...I think it is a blemish on the car's appearance. BTW the insurance co. did offer to install an app that records speeds, accelerations, braking, etc. - I passed on this opportunity.

Seems to me that while the issue is one of privacy, you did possibly mislead your insurance company into a low mileage policy, but in reality are driving substantially more.

Look at this from the insurance companies point of view. For example, you tell them you have a short commute (under five miles a day), but in truth your commute is 60 miles a day. Because of the higher mileage, you are statistically more likely to get into an accident due to the fact that you spend more time driving. This puts you in a higher risk pool, and may or may not increase your rates. This is also potentially a policy violation, and the insurance company can look at this as fraud and drop your policy.

The other place they might get your mileage from is if you live in a state where your vehicle must be undergo an annual safety inspection (either at your dealer, or an authorized inspection station). You can complain about privacy all you want, but we live in an age where data is freely exchanged, and your insurance company has the right to protect themselves from fraud.

Thanks for the heads-up on this, Choppen. As you say, the mileage would've been updated through regular channels anyway, but I never would've thought that this information is shared by Porsche. Sheesh, good to know.

What is a scan gauge II?
It's a small gauge that hooks up to your OBD-II port and gives lots of info about your car. A lot of info you might not want anyone to know. It's good for modern cars without a lot of gauges. But it tells you how many miles a day you drive, your speed, highest rpm, etc. you can leave four gauges displayed. Water temp, Boost, there are probably 20 different gauges you can display.
