I have noticed that when I run in sport mode, the PSE is louder than when I just hit the button in normal mode. I’m not talking about the pops and stuff in the overrun. I’m just saying it’s louder in Sport than in normal mode with button pushed. Can anyone explain this for me?

There is alot going on with the engine mapping,
I understand the backfire but i cant get my head around how the exhaust gets louder overall even with the valve closed.

I have been looking for a hidden valve since day one ;)

I may be wrong here, but I think engine mapping determines how much fuel goes in the engine at a given RPM. Simplistically put, more fuel, more exhaust gas, more noise.

I think the hidden valve is the turbo!.. ;) :giggle:

Well it’s not idle as I have sat there and toggled the exhaust button and there’s not much difference and the tach says the same. Switching to Sport at idle there is a noticeable difference in volume and sound with little change in RPM. I don’t get it.

could it be a shift in the timing? different cam profiles will idle differently.

I'm sure it's the engine mapping. My '17 Boxster does the same (normal/sport) even though I do not have the PSE. In sport my rpm goes up to 1000, most noticeable when the engine is warm. With a cold engine there is much less difference normal/sport.

I point an accusatory finger at the soundaktor module... Have you disabled it on your car?

I assume it's related to what MikePhDPE mentioned - the maps are making the engine do different things with the air, and so it sounds different. Sport sounds very different from normal with the Soundaktor disabled and no PSE, so the difference would seem to be coming from the engine.

Well, 718 PSE are really lame compared to other Porsche PSE and i guess it is becuse of the turbo.
And cars with partical filters are even more muted.

A non turbo 6 banger have 2 separete mufflers with a valve on both mufflers, depending on model the mufflers can be connected.
Our mufflers should be seen as on big muffler and on the right muffler we have a single valve.

So with the valve closed only the left route of the exhaust are being used and partially the right muffler.
With the valve open both routes are being used and both mufflers are being fully used.
So if we compare the difference in dB between valve open/close i would say it is the same in normal/sport.

That’s just it.....it’s not. That’s why I asked the question in the first place. You would think either mode would produce same but the sound is much different in Sport than in normal with PSE button pushed.

Thats because of the engine map in Sport regardless if the valve is open or not.
But how much louder it gets with the valve open should be the same, like:
Normal - valve closed - 60dB
Normal - valve open - 65dB

Sport - valve closed - 73dB
Sport valve open - 78dB

But one thing with Sport and the valve open does is that the frequency rangers gets alot wider!
So in that sense it gets louder, due to the engine map.

As far as I could tell, pushing the PSE button in Normal mode made absolutely no difference in my 718S. It was different but not that much different in my 718S even in Sport mode, didn't really get much in the way of pops and crackles, just minimal. In my 991.2S on the other hand there is a slight difference in Normal mode with PSE on but not very much. In my view, it's only worth using in conjunction with Sport mode, where it really does make a huge difference in the 991.2S. Not sure if the Sports Chrono makes a difference to the PSE output, got it with the 911 but not the 718.
