Hi,

I've noticed my base 718C provides a punchier response when driving with Sport mode than when driving with Sport+.

If I maintain say 3000rpm and 3rd gear with constant throttle and suddenly accelerate maintaining the same gear (PDK in manual mode) the torque provided by the engine is noticeably greater on Sport mode than if I do the very same thing on Sport +. In fact, the response I get on Sport+ is roughly similar to the response obtained with Normal mode. The only mode that really feels punchier is Sport. How is that possible?

I've checked that with Sport+ the turbo is always spooled up; it seldom reaches 0,0 psi, whereas with Sport mode turbo pressure falls down to 0,0 psi when off-throttle. This fact I think should make the response with Sport+ to be more powerful than with Sport, however, my butt has proved otherwise.

Agreed. I noticed the same thing in my 718B. Sport gives a snappier response while in Sport+ the turbo stays spooled up, but otherwise does not feel as eager. Go figure.
Glad to see i am not the only one with a lower response in Sport+.
Maybe Sport mode prioritizes mid range torque and Sport+ gives a better response at the high end of the tachometer.

Maybe your butt dyno is feeling the turbo lag in Sport mode compared to the lesser turbo drag of the Sport+?

Our bodies feel more abrupt changes in acceleration than linear changes. It's the delta between the two our bodies could be interpreting?

Maybe?
It might be possible but, in that case, I don't think so, because the response I feel in Sport+ I'd say is the same as in Normal mode. If the problem was the turbo lag, I would feel an even slower response in Normal mode.
In Sport there's a little turbo lag, but after this very brief lag I can feel the car accelerating harder than in any of the other modes.

I tried! lol

I haven't really noticed this myself but if so;
S+ is more of a track use setting and smooth response is more important than a snappy response.
This makes sense to me. My previous car had different throttle maps that you could select in Sports mode (Snow, Progressive, Linear, Sport, Extreme). None of them changed the power but they did change the throttle response. 'Sport' was the default setting in Sport Mode, which immediately made the car feel like it had more power, while 'Progressive' was the default in Standard. While 'Sport' was the most impressive (including the soundtrack), for track-type use many of us preferred 'Linear' as it gave a more balanced throttle control.

I've figured out another possible theoretical explanation as to why I feel a snappier response in Sport than in Sport+.
When I noticed this, I was running on RON 95 gasoline (91 AKI for the US, If I'm not mistaken).
Maybe in Sport + the ECU advances the ignition timing a bit to maximize engine performance. However, due to the relatively low octane rating I was using (RON 95/ AKI 91 instead of the recommended RON 98/AKI 93), the anti-knock sensor warned the ECU about the "low" octane rating and thus prevented this ignition timing change which would have maximized engine response and then forced the ECU to revert to Normal mode ignition timing and so, Normal mode performance.

This is just a guess. What sort of fuel were you guys running on when you also noticed a softer engine response in Sport+ than in Sport?
I might as well look for RON 98 gasoline and give Sport+ a second chance.

Agreed, I would say it’s the surge when you hit boost that’s providing the feeling of more. My guess is if you were to see this on a dyno you’ll get the same peak numbers with different delivery graphs.

Sure. I don't think I was actually getting more power in Sport, just a more noticeable response. As you said, same overall numbers but different power/torque curve shape, which I think makes Sport mode to be more appropriate for spirited public road driving than Sport+.
