Newbie to Porsche here but super happy with our 718 Boxster S, amazing car!!

Been reading a bit on the different tunes, etc., my question; anyone use or have experience with the RaceChip Tuning box? Pros, cons?

Thanks!!

I've started down this rabbit hole and from what I've been able to deduce, it's the APR tune you want. I'm just starting to look into it, not sure if there are multiple stages (1,2,3), but the stage one seems to really improve the driving experience

Piggy back controllers like the Racechip are about the last thing I'd use on a 718. Reflash is the way to go, we're a COBB Pro-Tuner, just want to get our bias out in the open. Whatever reflash you get will be better than a piggyback..

Hey Joshua, can you explain why a piggyback is so bad? I had one in my Audi A4 2.0T and it worked great. Was able to remove it for warranty work with NO issue at all. And the modest increase in torque was just the right amount. Would love to understand why this is problematic. (Not a troll post. Really interested in differing points of view.)

I've talked about this on this site if you do a search I'm sure you'll find it.

We're a COBB Pro-tuner just to be up front about our bias.

I'm an engineer and was the lead calibrator for a piggy back company for many years. I've tuned hundreds and hundreds of cars with piggy backs. They work well in some applications, like a Toyota pickup. Not so much in a sophisticated DIT car like the 718. Fooling the load inputs and crank angle sensor is how a piggyback manipulates the ECU. So your ECU no longer knows the real crank position, which is critical for DI cars. The start of injection gets shifted with the ignition timing by doing this. Very bad! The ECU no longer knows how much boost it's running and consequently how much air mass it's moving. This is a critical calculation. This affects many things from stability management and traction control to safety systems within the ECU.

I'm sure you can make some power with a piggy on this platform, however when you have so many good reflash options why would you even consider a piggy back?

Just looking at tuner options. Not advocating for, and not experience but FWIW stumbled on this link re: piggy back tunes while googling. Its not done on a 718, or heck even on a Porsche

I pulled the chute & purchased/installed a RaceChip GTS-Black unit on my eb. | Ford Mustang Ecoboost Forum

I don't know anything about other tuned systems, but my RaceChip GTS works amazing in my base 718 Boxster. I smoked a brand new SS Camaro today. No theories here, just user experience. The torque is insane. I am sure APR and COBB are amazing too. I added their XLR pedal tuner. I cant wait to take her out ever day.

Has anyone dynoed Racechip. I guess that would be the best way to compare it to other options. I posted dynoes of my APR tuned 718 S last week and it pretty much matched up with the claims made by APR which is reassuring to see customers indepednantly achieving the claimed results. I find customers reports on tune results to be a fairly unreliable indicator of actual results. And I agree with above that a piggyback does work but would not be the optimal way to tune this car and would have compromises that may not be noticable in a street driven car that does not see sustained load.
