I'm pricing out a 2019 Cayman (base). I'm really not looking for any options, either -- likely Guards Red with a 6MT and nothing else. The Configurator gives me a price of $57,950. I'm assuming that's MSRP.

If I asked a dealer to order this exact car, is it realistic to expect a discount under MSRP? If so, what is common/reasonable?

Thanks for the insight.

In August 2017 I ordered a base 2018 Cayman with PDK and NO other options. Just a standard color (white), standard seats, standard radio, etc.

At the time I believe the MSRP for a no-option car was around $55,700.

I paid $54,800 for my car with PDK.

I called around to various dealers in the NJ area and also visited some. Generally it was an unpleasant experience because (in my opinion) none of the sale people were very interested in selling me a low option car.

But when I called the guy at Porsche Monmouth he was very straightforward. Gave me a firm price right away and asked only for $1000 deposit. I flew down to Atlanta and picked it up December 1, 2017 at the PEC (but I know this did not affect its price). Had a great drive home to NJ.

That price included everything except NJ sale tax. I bought the car for cash but honestly, I don't think that made any difference.

Before I actually ordered my 2018 Cayman this past February, I talked with sales associates at several different dealerships and got the impression from a couple of them that there was more "discount" room the more optioned-up the car (read more expensive with more profit opportunities on the options). Ultimately, I received an 8% discount on my heavily-optioned Cayman but again, I am not sure that would apply to a lightly-optioned car.

I got 6% off MSRP on a lightly optioned GTS. Year-over-year new car sales are down industry wide in the U.S., so dealers should be more motivated to move existing inventory over custom orders. You could likely get a better deal in terms of percent off when buying off the lot, but most 718's I've seen in inventory are over-optioned (more margin for the dealer) by $5 - $15k in my opinion.

My moderately optioned 981 Cayman Base allowed me to get a 5% discount from my dealer when I ordered it. I am getting 5% off my more heavily optioned 2019 on order from the same dealer. And, when I begin the ordering process my SA, Dylan, is great in the amount of time he will spend over a period of weeks going back and forth about the ideal configuration. He knows me well and makes great suggestions consistent with how I think about things and how I drive. When I am ready to pull the trigger, he always seems to be able to come up with the allocation. If you keep current on the 2019s, you will see that right now they are pretty dear and yet, we had no trouble placing the order. All this coupled with them being good about the trade in value I receive and the level and quality of service and overall ongoing treatment from this dealer makes the discount more than fair. Net net.....if you are just shopping price, maybe 5% is average or a bit low but if you are shopping total value received, then, 5% is excellent-to me.
