Hi guys, new to the forum :)

Recently got my 2018 MT Cayman S after a long wait. Loving it so far.
I was wondering if there is a DIY way to swap out the headlight bulbs like how the older 718s used to. Heard that newer 718s have their headlight housings bolted into the main frame (hence the tool box doesn't include the Headlight wrench...?) Is this really true? :|

I’m reviving this thread, as I recently replaced the headlight bulbs in my 2018 Cayman S. I wasn’t pleased with the color temperature of the OEM bulbs (OSRAM Original Xenarc - color temp = 4300K) with yellowish color making the car look outdated.

I replaced the bulbs with the OSRAM Cool
Blue Intense Xenarc - color temp = 6200K which is closer to LED color. The video below is part of my DIY series, and shows my experience changing the bulbs…

It wasn't necessary to remove the bumper. The whole conversion can be done by accessing the components thru the wheel wells. I made the conversion two years ago as per the instructions in this thread.

OMG… and to think I spent all that time taking the headlights out… that’s a great example of “tricks of the trade”…

Taking the bumper out wasn’t bad… taking the headlights out with that small amount of space, was longer and tricky. I wonder if you could reach out the headlights screws from the wheel well as well?

I may pull the video out and remake it if I ever have to do this again…. I feel irresponsible leaving the video on the hard way to do it, while there is a much easier method…. I’ll have to think about it.

To be fair, accessing the components thru the wheel wells wasn't all that fun. It's a cramped space and one must be a bit of a contortionist to get visuals on the components. But I did it with the car on the ground and on jack stands. I now have a Quickjack that raises the car higher, which would have helped quite a bit. Not sure about the ability to access headlight screws. via the wheel well.

This reminds me when I replaced the coolant thermostat in my Macan. The “repair manual procedure” calls for putting the car in service mode, which entails the removal of the bumper and disassembly of many components so that the front could be slide 10mm to give you slight better access to the front of the engine.

I said to myself, I’m not gonna go through all this process just to gain 10mm. So figured out a way to do this without having to put the car in service mode… hence a new “trick of the trade” was developed…

I yet again upgraded the headlight bulbs, this time used PrecicionLED LED bulbs. After much research, found that these LED bulbs had very good performance (in paper) and wanted to try them on.

@GTS18BGTS , this time I used your suggested method of accessing bulbs from the wheel well, and it was by far a much better way of accessing it.

HID to LED Headlight Bulb Conversion (PrecisionLED) - Porsche 718 Cayman S

I did some interesting comparisons in the end… side by side. On same road…. As sync as possible. Keep in mind that the OSRAM I took out are the last generation HIDs 6200K. There was a significant improvement from OEM to this next get bulbs already. And I believe another step improvement from OSRAM next gen to LED.

Disclaimer, when I tested OSRAM the pavement was dry, when I tested LED the pavement was wet hence darker. Do not use pavement as comparison for brightness. You can compare lawn and other areas.

In the video in post # 7, I embedded a side by side comparison that was not well executed as road conditions were different. I filmed the OSRAM CBI Next Gen bulb in dry road conditions, while the Precision LED Kepler series was filmed under wet road conditions, making the comparison flawed.

In this new video I filmed both bulbs under same conditions. Much better comparison.

20% Discount @ precisionled.com

Use Code PForum20 to get 20% discount on any PrecisionLED product.

Note that I didn’t get paid to do this installation or review and I had to buy my own bulbs… but the PrecisionLED was gracious enough to extend this 20% discount to my viewers and followers, and 718Forum members.
