Hi,

I have been told that Porsche are planning to replace the 2.5 liter engine. I know that the GTS comes now only with 4.0 liter flat 6 but not sure concerning the S version.
Is that just a vicious rumer or is it true? Will it also be flat 6? What the reason for replacing it?

Thanks

Not heard or seen that. Wouldn't want it. I saw a discussion in a Porsche magazine where the 718 base and sport versions would remain with the current engine, although electric was envisioned for some remote future.

The F4T has a place for Porsche in all the countries penalizing large cubic inch engines (most of Europe, China). I am still scratching my head about the relative position of the F6TT and the 4.0 NA-6, but I have no dog in that race...

Fuel costs in the UK would cripple 718 sales if they moved them all to larger a displacement. At the moment we pay around £1.05 a litre which is cheap. It reached a high of about £1.35 at one point. Even though you don’t buy a sports car for its fuel economy, it’s a deciding factor for many. I for one will be using mine as a daily so the 2.0 works fine for me. If, on the other hand, there was a 4.0 sat behind me and even though it would be most welcome, I just wouldn’t be able to justify the fuel costs to run it as a daily. IIRC China has a massive tax on high displacement engines and this is a market where the 2.0 and 2.5 have done extremely well. I would imagine the sales of GTS models will start to drop off in that market now with the new 4.0 but on the flip side the US market may sky rocket as the F4 hasn’t been a big hit over there.
If the UK had the same fuel prices as the US I would welcome a 4.0 F6 with open arms.

I've watched lots of youtube reviews about the 718. The majority of them said that it is a brilliant car and all of them said that the sound is the down side of the car.
Now you're saying that if they'll go back t 6cl they'll not cell as much.

That's a bit confusing :)

Thanks for your replay

Tell the YouTube snoobs to **** off (I got yelled at for dropping an F bomb recently :ROFLMAO:).
Most are Porsche "purists" or claim to be, and can't get over that a Porsche car doesn't have a flat blah blah blah blah..... Get over yourselves. Innovate or your competitor will do it for you. Don't like the sound, get an exhaust.... Want a little more out of the car, work with a tuner and tune your car.

These cars are underrated, and those that know..... know that they shouldn't. I've owned a lot of cars and trucks in my time, and my GTS is one bad ____ car (fill in the blank with your own expletive). I love it. It has a lot going for it.🏎🚀

I know this might blow people's minds, but, YouTubers are NOT the average purchaser. If companies solely tailored their products based on YouTubers, they'd be out of business fairly quickly.

For example; The Straightpipes bozos know very little about cars and aren't even the targeted demographic for most of the cars in their reviews. Also, they have practically zero perspective on the cars they drive.

Manufacturers would be foolish to use YouTube for their market research.

@Baka1969 - Oh man do I know..... Similar topic other than YouTube - The LLC that my wife and I own we build show trucks for clients that go to SEMA. More so we manage the builds, and my buddy who owns a shop here in town does all the awesome work. We have to deal with the people who think Diesel Brothers, who have a show on the History Channel, actually know what they are talking about. Every year we run into them at SEMA, we smile, tell them they suck to their face, and move on with our lives. They never bark back because they know it's true, and they don't build their trucks / projects. They farm it out to the lowest builder or whomever will do it for free. It's a business model I hate, and it doesn't do anything for the industry. SEMA of 2019 my crew had to detail two of their trucks at the photo shoots the Saturday after SEMA because they didn't know they needed to be showroom ready. Everyone knows the trucks need to be spotless for the photo shoots. EEEEIDIOTS as my wife would say.... </rant>
Sorry for the rant...... that topic gets going.

They are an aspect of the Motorsports / aftermarket culture I wish I could just do away with.

When I wrote YouTube reviews, I meant, both, youtubers and car journalists. Are car journalists also doesn't know anything about cars?
Don't get me wrong, I'm replacing my straight six that sounds amazing to the flat four that I still haven't heard in real life but don't mind that much as I know I'm moving to a better sports car.

That being said, I just wanted to know if they are planning to replace this motor and if they do, why?

Thanks

I didn't say they wouldn't sell, I said they wouldn't sell as many in the likes of China due to their high displacement tax. Personally I dont think that, in the UK, the 4.0 would sell as well as the 2.0 F4 does now. The 2.0 is well priced in the market place in line with the likes of Audi's TT and the Alpine a110.

I do believe that many automotive journalists have credibility issues.

The 4.0 hasn't replaces the F4T 2.0, just the F4T 2.5 in the GTS; which as far as I understand was not selling as well as Porsche hoped in western markets.

BTW, forgot to add something. Here, we do not have many dealers to buy a certain brand from like in the US and in other countries. We have one official importer and all the rest are parallel imports which have thier downsides.
When I went to the official importer, they told that they are not importing the S model anymore because the manufacturer stopped manufacturing them (which was, obviously, a lie).
