My 2017 Cayman S, just experienced a RMS and water pump failure. I was think of purchasing at the end of the lease (March 2020), but now I'm really skeptical. Has anyone had a similar issue?

I have no experience over the issue you mention.

with regards to purchasing at the end of the lease, I am wondering what your residual is because it might make more sense rather to buy a two-year-old CPO with a four year warranty (2+2) rather be in your car which is likely similarly priced but with only a two year warranty. I might be way off on the math depending on your residuals.

I'm on my 3rd water pump already. ?On a 2017 Boxster (base). First one failed around the time I had the first scheduled maintenance/service and the second one failed around 30k miles. I have about 38k miles on the car now.

Water pumps are "wear parts" on 987s, but I thought they'd been improved since those days. Rear Main Seal likewise used to go out on some 987s, causing leaks. Neither of these bits would cause real trouble and both gave early warning. The water pump would generally not leak on the floor but the level would go low enough for a warning light. Top it up, buy the parts from Pelican Parts, go to your qualified non-dealer tech and get it replaced. I did it twice on my 987...Purchased at 38k miles and sold at 140K. I never had a RMS problem but symptom is oil leaking between engine and trans.

If it goes too long, you get a wonky clutch feel because oil is getting on the clutch. Sometimes, that will mean a new clutch as well as the RMS. They're in the same spot. Many replace the clutch as a matter of course since they've gone to all the trouble to get in there. I'm notoriously easy on clutches, so I probably wouldn't change it. I've had 8 different stick shift sports cars since I started mucking around with them. Never have needed a new clutch.

You are the first I've hear need a RMS on a 718.

First Water Pump leak for me April 2021. 27782 miles 2017 718 Boxster S. No indication I had a problem. No smell, no visible leaking. First 5000 miles on the Nurburgring. Ring Dave"

car in for Oil Change at Porsche dealership. Currently being repaired.
So I really did not discover leak. Car never got hot, been sitting during winter. Never noticed any spots on garage floor.
PDK transmission.
Thanks Dave. I thought I caught an odor of coolant the other day, but I guess I'll have to see if it occurs again or I could drop the rear underbody panel and take a look. It was faint. I had the top down and was at a traffic light. Could have been another car.

My water pump needs replacing - a late 2016 base model. You can see from this picture the Pink colour of the leaking coolant and the leak from the pump has just been confirmed by local Porsche Specialist (too far to drive to my Porsche Dealer with a water leak that could get worse at any time). Car has done 29,500 miles

My 17 is in the shop right now getting the water pump replaced. Had a "ghost" coolant system fault error pop up a couple of times after a few hours of highway driving and would go away the next time the car was started up. An independent shop ran the code and said it was a vacuum system leak, and as long as my temps stayed normal it was good to drive. Finally found the time to take it to the dealer (while I'm still under warranty) and get it fixed. Hadn't noticed any other symptoms besides the fault message. I'm right at 30k miles, for reference - not sure if it has already been replaced before or if this is the first time

2018 cayman - 25000 miles, almost 1 year out of my 3 year warranty, yellow warning, pump failure. Contacted porsche customer care, they aren't doing anything. It isn't even about the 2000 dollar cost of the pump, just ownership that I haven't even driven 30k miles and it is ruined. F them, I'm never buying a Porsche again, you'd think that they'd own up to their craftsmanship.

I just have 21 k on my 2018 but my Porsche warranty is over time wise but I bought another extended warranty...so far no issues and I do love the **** thing...if I have to change a water pump so be it. I'll live.
To date I've done all maint. myself...everything by the book. Oil/filters air and oil/brake fluid/plugs without issue.

Germans just learned the word wasserpumper anyways....
