Has anyone had their the misfortune of having to take their cars to a body shop in the south peninsula/south bay... Say, between Palo Alto and Santa Clara CA?

That always sucks. Only know good shops in NC so I'm no help...but best of luck for a quick resolution.

One advise I have is you may want to make sure the shop you pick is Porsche approved and on this list:
https://www.porschecollisioncenter.com/
You may take a bigger hit when it's time to trade in because the dealer may not be able to certify it if the shop was not approved.
