Haven't driven my GTS in just over a month and haven't started it in about three weeks. Weather was a tad warmer this morning, about 38 degrees and went out to the other garage and started it up. Holy Guacamole, it was smoking blue stinky smoke like crazy. Shut it down and let it sit for a few minutes and restarted. The smoking stopped and I let it warm up till the oil temp and water temp were both at about 190 degrees and revved it at 2000 rpm for about a minute before shutting it down. Everything was fine after the second startup. The garage is heated and kept at 60 degrees.

Anyone else ever get smoke like that on a cold start?

Don't mean to be an alarmist, but blue smoke from the exhaust is typically not a good sign, especially based on your description (which sounds excessive). Worn piston rings (unlikely), not properly seated, or oil filled past max. I'd take it in for a check-up and possibly compression diagnostics.

totally different motor application. But my boat motor puts out a fair bit of smoke on the first start up coming out of winterization and also puts out a little if we haven't started it up in a couple weeks during the boating season. It's not a turbo 4, but it is a supercharged 4.

So far my Boxster hasn't gone more than two weeks without a drive. Won't be much longer until I pass the treacherous 2k break-in point!

Familiar from both my 987 and 718 in similar situation. For various reasons I don't go more than a week without a start-up/warm-up just sitting in the garage. Also roll back/forward to change tire orientation and avoid flat-spotting.
That’s kinda what I figured. Cars broken in, oil level is spot on. I did a test run back in September at my local drag strip and with no burnout but utilizing launch control, managed an 11.9 at 116 mph. Cars a beast for a four banger.

Started it again this morning and no repeat of smoking. The engine is a smooth and quiet marvel. I’m going to fire it up more frequently from now on. The weather has been particularly harsh this winter and when it’s 25 below zero, I don’t like going out to the other garage, let alone opening the overhead to run the car. :)

I have always heard that just starting and idling your engine then shutting down is a bad idea. It's one more cold start! Either store it properly according to Porsche guidelines or drive the thing for 10 or more miles.

I'm of the 2nd persuasion. I've had winter tires for all my water-cooled Porsches...3 so far. They're the best built cars I've ever seen. They don't rust. It's also a blast to drive them with winters in the snow.

Also, look under the car. The bottom is covered in plastic! The nose is plastic, the hood is aluminum. The wheel wells are lined. There are about 5 coatings on all the metal bits. The bolts are triple galvanized.

I owned a 987.1 Cayman. It looked brand new underneath after 100,000 miles, lots of track days and 10 winters. I too keep my car in a 60 degree garage when it's home...but it's not home as much in the winter as many.

Bumping an older thread but I am having the same issue now. I only drive my 718 1-2 times per week so it goes several days with no activity. I have noticed a few times recently some white smoke coming out of the exhaust on cold start which goes away after a few seconds. Nothing excessive, but something I noticed. However, this morning when I started my car after it had been sitting for a week there was a lot of white smoke from the exhaust - a pretty heavy amount which again stopped after I backed out of my garage and began to drive.

Anyone know what this could be? The car drive and feels normal otherwise. I dealt with something very similar years ago on my BMW 528i and the turbo ended up being replaced by the dealership. Hoping thats not the case for my 718.
