Smokers Package or Not - Where Do You Put Your Phone

Debating equipping the smokers package on my build. I like the clean look and power port. But I could also just use the power port in the footwell for the battery tender during winter. I like having a place to put my phone when driving. Is that cubby where most people put their phone without the smokers package? Looks like the cubby might also double as a place to put a small drink? Small bottle of water or cup of iced coffee?

Mine has the smoker's package and the Porsche Carplay connection in the tray of the armrest. But I don't use either. I installed a "ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount - Dash Mount" on the right side of the PCM so the phone is visible and easily placed/grabbed.

I don't ever use Carplay, don't even use BT. But I always stream music from the phone to my earbuds, every drive.

Yes, I recommend you do get the smoker's package though, for other reasons.

I have the carplay2 dongle so use apple carplay but if I put the phone in the console I keep forgetting it’s there so I sit my iPhone 12 Pro in the drivers side cup holder, closed up it’s a perfect fit 👍

I'd recommend getting the smoker's package too -- cleaner look, useful 12V port. It is so much easier to plug the charger in there than to reach for the one in the footwell.

I put my phone either in the storage compartment between the 2 seats, or I slip it into the open cubby on the driver side door. Both places are actually perfect for it.

FWIW, if you're looking for a secure mount that will really hold your phone, take a look at Porsche 991/981/718 ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount - Dash Mount | Rennline
I did something similar and fabricated a metal bracket that mounts at the same location as the Rennline one, but uses a ProClip (proclipusa.com) secure phone mount rather than magnetic.

Power for the phone comes from the passenger footwell 12v outlet.
Hope this gives you some ideas for other options.

Love your shift ball! Bet it really pops with your fabulous SBM exterior.

I optioned the Smoker's Package - mainly for aesthetics to give the console a finished look vs. a small dust catcher that isn't useful for much of anything
-the phone typically gets stored in the foot well net, sometimes the door pocket
(I have factory NAV and Android) so the phone's bluetooth is on for phone calls and texts as the Apple CarPlay is of no use for me

Here's another shot with the fobs in the console when I first saw the CGTS - too small for the fobs to fit

Wonder how these would look (and fit) in order to hold keys/phone? No dimensions shown so not sure of actual depth but may be a solution.
I have these and have to say they fit extremely well. I've not taken to using them fully yet, as I haven't needed the storage space, but I bought them during the three-year wait to get my GTS because....well.....I just HAD to start amassing Porsche-related stuff in anticipation of the car! :)

The Bee's solution to iPhone, etc. I use a multiple port cup iPhone flexible stalk mount which is rigid enough to fit into the inboard cup holder and can be tightened to not "shake, rattle, or wobble". I would have had the iPhone Pro Max in the photos but it was taking the pictures. :)
Setup: mount gets its power from the receptacle in the passenger footwell
Ports:
• three cigarette lighter
• three USB lightning
Uses:
• iPhone charging
• Front camera
• Rear camera (which I mount on the clear Lexan screen between the head rests mounted with suction cups). That cable can be run along the passengers seat when in use or, in my case, is wireless.
• Radar detector
• Car powered emergency spotlight or chart reading light for navigator when doing rallies.
• Tyre pressure pump in emergencies

The Apple CarPlay wireless dongle for the iPhone uses the centre storage area port and is Velcro'd under the lid to keep the compartment clean for driving gloves, ID badges, etc.

Per photo you can see the "Bee's" matching coffee cup (which gets tons of attention) is using the outboard cup holder. (Never used!!!! It's for show only. Don't want to take a chance with spillage in the cockpit).

This is the first (of many) mount that I've found over the years that gives me all the power needed for all the goodies. Haven't blown a fuse yet with everything up and running (excepting, of course, the tyre pressure pump).

I use the Nine-volt phone charger with the smokers package. It connects seamlessly to the 12 V receptacle in the smoker’s cubby.

I know the title of this thread asked where to put a phone, but it also questioned whether to have the smokers package. Most responders in this and similar threads say they like the clean look that comes from being able to close the lid on the ashtray. Correspondingly, they dislike the look of the little tray that would be there otherwise.

Here is a dissenting viewpoint. Though the 12v socket could be a convenience I would dislike keeping a real lighter there. I'm not sure what the ashtray would be good for. Alternatively, the little tray that takes the place of the smokers package turns out to be handy as temporary storage for small items like a credit card, coins (though rarely used these days), even the ignition key once in a while. It really isn't disruptive visually, but the thought of having a smokers package would really bother me. On the rare occasion that I need a 12v socket such as for a USB converter, the one in the passenger footwell serves well enough.

As I say, it's just a dissenting viewpoint and may not be popular.

Perfectly sensible to me. I have the smoker's package in my current car but had the cubby in the 981. I used it to store coins, but as @jimmuller mentioned, we don't tend to use coins much anymore. Besides, you can still store some coins with the ashtray out. I like having the 12 V for those rare occasions when I need to plug in my phone as the passenger footwell outlet is awkward to access from the driver's seat. As far as looks, I think that it is a wash.
