If that cubby is 3 inches on the diagonal most phones would fit standing up. How the heck small is it? 2 inches square would be enough.......
Maybe enough if you are stationary. Any phone but the oldest flip phone would come tumbling out the instant you take a turn in a way that is intended with a Cayman.

I'd recommend getting the smoker's package too -- cleaner look, useful 12V port. It is so much easier to plug the charger in there than to reach for the one in the footwell.

I put my phone either in the storage compartment between the 2 seats, or I slip it into the open cubby on the driver side door. Both places are actually perfect for it.

Debating equipping the smokers package on my build. I like the clean look and power port. But I could also just use the power port in the footwell for the battery tender during winter. I like having a place to put my phone when driving. Is that cubby where most people put their phone without the smokers package? Looks like the cubby might also double as a place to put a small drink? Small bottle of water or cup of iced coffee?
It's a free option, at least in the GTS, and that power port is perfect for the tire pump in the frunk. I just got my car last Saturday so thanks for info about the footwell port!

FWIW, if you're looking for a secure mount that will really hold your phone, take a look at Porsche 991/981/718 ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount - Dash Mount | Rennline
I did something similar and fabricated a metal bracket that mounts at the same location as the Rennline one, but uses a ProClip (proclipusa.com) secure phone mount rather than magnetic.

Power for the phone comes from the passenger footwell 12v outlet.
Hope this gives you some ideas for other options.

Love your shift ball! Bet it really pops with your fabulous SBM exterior.

My 981 had the cubby; I have the smokers package on my 718. Observations:
  • Never seen a phone other than the old flip phones that would fit in the cubby. No way.
  • I put my iPhone in the console of the 718, which is required if you use CarPlay unless you buy a third party wireless unit.
  • I used a phone mount in the 981
  • No drinks either - it's too small and shaped wrong. The only use I ever found for the cubby was for coins for parking
  • It's coming up on a year for the 718 and I haven't used the covered cubby (which has much less room than the open one) for anything.
  • My feeling is order whatever you think looks better - both are pretty much useless.
OMG, Steve, that's funny... seems like getting a 718 Boxster is like moving from a 3 bedroom house to a studio apartment - but a really nice apartment. They don't want phone distractions so it must go in the tiny console. They don't want beverage distractions so you get useless cupholders. It's funny they offer an ash tray though bc that's the biggest distraction of all, especially when a hot ash falls into your crotch then onto the seat.

I don't drink anything in the Cayman except for water from a proper sports water bottle which works fine in the cupholder and I don't smoke. I never make or take calls when driving so I only use the phone as a Nav unit and a music source. A phone holder works fine (I used the T-Design model in the 981) but Carplay is vastly superior, especially with 67 year old eyes. I really don't find the size of interior an issue. YMMV.

The Cayman/Boxster platform is actually pretty competent as far as storage space in the frunk and trunk. Amazing what you can do if you are prepared to have only two seats.

I am fully aligned with you. I have a no drinks/food rule in my car. If my passenger or I need to eat, we eat first and then get in the car. I would highly recommend against having any coffee/soda/sugary drinks in the car. It will inevitably spill and likely in the centre console where it may affect the functionality of the buttons.

Sorry for delay in adding pics, just had a total left hip replacement and until today I couldn’t bend to get in to put the phone in and take pics 😅
Before anyone mentions stability, when closed to smallest diameter it really IS stable, you’d have to be off road to be concerned about movement.
Also, as mentioned, this is to simply store the phone, not to use it. Stops me from having to keep it in my pocket or forgetting it in the armrest storage.
I use a carplay2 dongle

Android user here, so no CarPlay to worry about, but I always put my phone and wallet in the door panel pocket. I don't have the smoker's package on my car, so my center console only has a 12v socket (which I use for the battery tender). The USB port is in the glove box, should I need to charge my phone.
Smokers cubby is my vote
  • looks cleaner to me when closed
  • store my used gum wrappers if I chew gum and drive (sometimes debatable if I can do that at the same time)
  • added a low profile USB charger (Aukey CC-Y11) that can stay installed and still close the lid for easy passenger access
  • phone goes in console for android auto (see thread on this forum by simaservis1108 - great to work with)

This brand is not on Amazon now (policy violations) but the full length is 1 11/16" with button, case only is 1 7/16", I imagine there are some others similar in dimensions.

I found it on walmart.com but looks to be OOS

Seems like it is still available for ordering here:

But it is a Canadian site.

This will be my rule, also, but it's going to take major behavior modification on my part... right now I'm driving a 2015 Silverado 2500 HD and I'm often on the go for 3 or 400 miles at a clip or more. I'm forced to eat in the truck since every MickyD's or other fast food is drive-up only was covid and worker shortages persist... no indoor dining and no sign that they're going to open the indoors up - ever! With all the sit down restaurants/diners, once you find one and get seated, you're killing an hour. So when I get my car it will be a life shift in many ways.

It is really anyone’s guess when things will revert to somewhat of a normal rhythm post pandemic. Personally, I think you are going to be so excited by the driving experience that the behaviour modifications will not feel much at all :) All the best with the wait for the new car :)
