According to our survey in the other post (View Poll Results: Which 718 Model do you have?), 30 Cayman (65 %) and 16 Boxster (35%) were sold. Since the penalty related to the driving skills of the convertible is so small compared to the Cayman, I would have expected the sales of the Boxster to be higher.
I was wondering if this survey is representative of a larger scale. And do we get similar percentages for the 981 models?
Here are two interesting links (only for the US) (see Europe below). Since I am not a statistician, I will need your help to interpret these numbers. And I certainly understand that this may not be a mater of interest for everyone.
Sales of Cayman 2014 to 2018: Porsche Cayman US car sales figures
Sales of Boxster 2014 to 2018: Porsche Boxster US car sales figures
When comparing statistiques for the US, we get these numbers:
Boxster Cayman Total
2017 2287 (45%) 2800 (55%) 5087
2016 2670 (43%) 3590 (57%) 6260
2015 3102 (47%) 3561 (53%) 6663
2014 3875 (53%) 3417 (47%) 7292
It seems that sales for the two models (Boxster/Cayman) are pretty close. In 2014, more Boxster were sold. From 2015 to 2017, more Cayman were sold. We also notice that less Boxster and Cayman were sold in 2017 compared to 2014-2016. Year 2016 is even lower than 2014-2016 and probably 2016 represents sales for both 981 and 982.
Now, since 2018 is not over yet (May 5 2018), lets take these same statistiques only from January to April: 2014 to 2018
Boxster Cayman Total
2018 810 (41%) 1146 (59%) 1956
2017 841 (51%) 799 (49%) 1640
2016 909 (42%) 1258 (58%) 2167
2015 938 (47%) 1072 (53%) 2010
2014 1361 (52%) 1250 (48%) 2611
Still the sales of the two models seems to be close (never less than 41 % and never exceeding 59 %). It seems that sales in 2017 slowed down (1640) but then increased by 19% in 2018 (1956) for the overall 718 models. But the sales of the Boxster are slightly lower in 2018 (810) compared to 2017 (841). However, The sales of the Cayman increased by 43% in 2018 (1146) compared to 2017 (799).
I know that it is still early to come to a definitive conclusion but it seems for now that the Cayman is getting where it was. Average sales for the Cayman from 2014 to 2016 (January to April, where I think no 982 were sold... to be confirmed ) is 1193 compared to sales for same period for 2018 : 1146.
Could it be that buyers got scared at the beginning of 718 (because of all the bashing related to the new engin) and that now they are starting to regain confidence?
I can't explain why the Boxster is taking more time than the Cayman to get where it was. But we see that the sales of the Boxster are decreasing since 2014. Maybe it's the new tendency for the convertible. And maybe the Cayman is getting more and more popular. But in 2017 more Boxster (841) than Cayman (799) were sold. But the biggest gap is in 2018 Boxster 41% vs Cayman 59%.

The following statistiques show that the sales of the 718 Cayman in Europe are already very high in 2017 (3632) and except for year 2016 (4046), sales for 2017 are the highest since 2009.

What is your interpretation of these numbers? The four links above could give you more info to analyse.
