The manual is pretty basic in this. Turn the dial for the different modes.

Do I need to have the car stopped to change these, or is it OK to do when driving?

PASM - can I hit the switch while driving or does it need to be stopped?

Also, how long do I need to wait in between hitting the Sport Response button? Ids it OK to use this feature often, or is it taking miles off of the engine life?

Thanks a lot,
Valerie

You can change modes on the fly. Thats how they are designed. No stop - just switch an enjoy.

You can press Sport Response as often you like. No need for idle time. It doesn´t hurt or wear out anything.

Same for the launch control... tires OK! - they will suffer ;)

I don't have the PDK but if I did, and had the Sport Response button, I could imagine using it on expressway on and off ramps with nice long curves. With my manual transmission, I do normally drive in Sport mode nearly all the time, going to Normal mode only when a little quieter would be appreciated by others. My Individual selection has Sport mode plus PASM Sport mode (listed as "suspension" in the options) and I have been known to switch to that in place of Sport Response.

... and in many other situations too :)

Thank you both for the info.

I have had my Boxster for a little over a month now and I find I always instantly put it Sport Mode right after turning the "key" to start it. I still have 185 miles until the end of the run-in regimen so this is not yet a performance thing. It is a pure pleasure thing because Sport Mode changes the exhaust note to something so very satisfying. It gives the exhaust a note of authority and the burbles and pops are immensely satisfying. As I stated in another post, my girl friend calls it a "Male Mating Call". As a very significant side benefit, Sport Mode also turns off that incredibly annoying f(*%ing feature that automatically stops the engine when idling.

I love that sport dial! On my PDK CGTS I switch modes frequently, using normal mode when cruising constant speed to lower rpm and engine noise to listen to my Burmester, Sport Mode for general stop and go driving, Sport+ for open road driving and to get better acceleration from stop. I use Sport Response to pass, highway on ramps and for more spirited acceleration from stop (only mode on dial where I don't so much feel the below 2k rpm lag). I have to say Sport Response is so much more than I expected. On some forums people said it was simply a quick, temporary way to go to Sport+. To me, it feels like Sport++.

I rarely, if ever, press the Sport Response button as I'm one of those that feels it's just a quick and temporary way to Sport Plus. But perhaps I'm missing something. I do however drive exclusively in manual selection mode (M) - I've probably not driven more than 20 miles during my 10,000 miles of ownership in automatic mode (D). Do you perhaps drive mostly in automatic mode? I tend to use Sport mode on a day-to-day basis, as I feel it has a better (more aggressive) throttle response in the lower rev ranges, whereas Sport Plus is feels better during more spirited driving in the upper rev ranges. I tend to go into Sport Plus mode more for the quicker shifts. Personally I hardly ever use normal mode; it's been limited to a few times in the winter.

I am unfortunately away from my car for 8 more days whIle on vacation. I do drive mostly in automatic mode and thought I recalled the car dropping a gear with speed constant after pressing sport response while driving in Sport+. I will test some more including monitoring turbo boost if driving in same gear/speed. I do feel launches were more powerful with Sport response and both would have been 1st gear. I will check and see if idle rpm is higher with Sport Resonse. I know some YouTubers claimed the button increased turbo boost and I was skeptical.

So what do you guys think the Sport Response button does? Does is simply force more air through the turbo, thus giving a higher turbo boost?

I only use it in Sport Plus mode, which I believe allows higher shift points and changes the PASM into Performance mode. Porsche claims the Sport Chrono package knocks off .4/sec in 0-60, but is that because of Launch Control, is that a different factor in itself?

To be honest, I'm not paying attention to the speedo - my attention is 99% on the road, with an occasional glance to the tach because I don't yet trust the car to not redline (I have a PDK). I'm just under a month with the car and still thrilled to go over 6,000 RPM and not feel like the car is hurting. That wasn't the case with my SLK, which is one of the reasons I bought a Porsche.

I can't speak for the S but on my base w/PDK the Sport button does several things. The obvious two are to raise the idle and the PDK's shift points. The change in exhaust note would be the result of the other stuff which all come under the heading of engine tuning. That would likely include valve and ignition timing, a different fuel/air map for the injectors, different turbo management. VifferMike also says it drops the thermostat temperature for the oil cooler because it anticipates that you will be driving harder. The .4sec from the Chrono package would seem to be from Launch Control.

My PDK has taken my engine to 7000 rpm once. The trouble with going much over 6000 is if you're in a lower gear it happens so fast, and if you in a higher gear you're going so fast, if you take my meanin'.

I've said before, but I really hope the next owner of my car doesn't read this - I driven mine like its been stolen for the last 36,000 miles.

My individual setting is Sport & PASM on and that's the setting its been on for at least 35,500 of those 36,000 miles. I only switch to indiv once the car is upto temp...

I use Sport response when overtaking and stuff... Sport + for twisty roads and I've noticed it's quite happy to hit redline in s+

I suspect the switch button on mine will wear out before the engine gives way lol
