Steering Wheel Swap Question

4462 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  GTS18BGTS
Hi all,

I stumbled upon this forum as I just purchased a 2018 718 Cayman last week. So far I'm pretty happy with the vehicle, but I have the standard GT steering wheel, withOUT multifunction. I ended up buying a multifunction GT steering wheel on eBay that was pulled from a 718 Boxster. The issue I'm having now is, the dealership is telling me that I need an enabler code for it to work with my vehicle, and that if I don't have that, it won't work. They also said that if I don't have the enabler code, there's no way for me to get it. Anyone have experience with this? Any truth to this, if so, any workaround?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. This is my first (possibly of many) posts on this forum.

Thanks for the reply. I've read that thread about 5 times prior to posting myself. I wasn't able to get a specific answer to the question I originally asked above.
You need the enabling codes for the multi-function wheel, there are two codes, one for the multi-function control and one for the steering wheel heater. These are VIN specific and are normally provided to the dealer or independent when the retrofit kit is ordered. You'll also need a new steering control module to allow the heater to work assuming you didn't have the steering wheel heating already.
Thank you, this is helpful. Where can one source a retrofit kit? How much are they? Same question for the steering control module? Just trying to get an accurate estimate, as it may not be worth it for me.

Thanks again for your input.
