Hi All,

As many of you know, I'm about to take delivery of a new Boxster GTS, by the end of the month hopefully.

The dealer and I did briefly discuss Supagard and he gave me a price, I can't remember now what that was but it wasn't cheap! I'm going to have to make a decision soon, either get them to do it or trust my new Porsche to an independent detailer.

I know some may say a few hundred quid is irrelevant compared to what I'm paying for the car, but I don't like being ripped off and, at the end of the day, I want to get what is best for the car.

Any views?

I had to look up Supagard……..so in the U.S. there are equivalents like ceramic coating, Scotchgard, clear bar/protective film, etc. I am assuming. You will get a myriad of responses and opinions. I do the clear film on my cars and, in fact, just picked up my newly delivered 2019 Cayman with the entire front done up to the door hinge line. I have had this done on every Cayman I have owned in colors of Guards Red, Carrera White, Black, Mahogany Metallic, and now Night Blue Metallic. On the previous 4 I have not had any issues with yellowing and, unless you looked really closely you cannot tell it is even there. These coatings are not inexpensive but I have seen several places where debris has hit and over time, the film has 'healed' with no discernible mark. These continue to improve and the one just applied to my Night Blue, I defy anyone to tell it is even there based on any seams or difference in shine. So, for me, worth it...…..but that is my choice. Fabric/leather protectors, I just keep these areas cleaned and supple with periodic treatments from Chemical Guys products. Ceramic Coating...….I have not given in yet. I actually like detailing the car and enjoy clay bar'ng and 'waxing' process. I may, someday, succumb to the Ceramic argument but not there yet. My two cents...…..

Independent detailer every time, this is their job. Do not let an OPC near it.

Mine was done by a local guy a few months after I got the car. Brilliant job and cost less than OPC wanted.

+1

Dr-John - do not let your OPC anywhere near your new paintwork with Supagard. The people applying it are valetters, not detailers. Secondly, they can't take the time to apply it correctly. It's also a massive mark up for the dealer. Total cost to them £<50. Cost to you £300 or so. Even as a freebee it is too expensive.

Seek a professional detailer in your area and they will machine polish your new pride and joy rather than scratch the bejesus out of the new paint with a rag that has just been used to clean a Cayenne that's been at Goodwood they will take pride in their work and use new microfibre cloths every time.

It's a No from Nosmo!!

I guess that I am fortunate. My dealer which is Porsche, Mercedes, Audi...……..owned and operated by a real enthusiast and very active supporter of PCA and our local region...……….has an installation room specifically built (air conditioned, air filtered...…...specific lighting) to install clear film protection as well as prep and apply Ceramic Coating. They employ a person whose job it is to do this work...…...specifically.

It seems from the above posts that the OPCs in the US offer a far more comprehensive detailing service than the ones in the UK. Supagard, Swissvax, etc etc are cheap money spinning tools for sales people in these parts. A proper detail is (currently) only offered by specialists. Granted, when asking the OPC for a detail they will connect you with a local detailer whom they have a relationship with.

Based on my impression of threads herein, US customers are not thrilled with dealer detailing offerings here in the states either. The dealers don't really have any incentive to do a first class job. I don't yet have an experience with a Porsche dealer but my last BMW purchase was very disappointing with regard to a coating installation. High price, minimal prep little effort. Never again!

My dealer in Maine has a professional who will come to the dealership and do paint correction and clear film . They only use one place for this .
Same for my dealer in NH. I'm quite happy with the way it came out. Basically, I don't know it's there.
...Hi neighbor! I'm in Southern Maine...my dealer is Stratham. SA is Anthony. Maybe I'll see you at one of their functions...glad you're satisfied with the quality of the application. Admittedly, I'm still on the fence...

We are western NH, on the Connecticut. Out GTS is going to go into its anti-mouse bubble tomorrow, since the snows are about to start. Unfortunate but it was a good first year as a Porsche owner. We got some good miles in and were able to push more at the end once the break in was over.
I am looking forward to next spring!

...OK...not so close! Easy to forget not everyone lives by the coast! Well, maybe we'll cross paths at some point anyway...
