Thinking about having the dealership install the TechArt Wing II.......

I would like to know the pros and cons of this modification and thoughts from the 718 crowd. I have attached a picture of what the wing looks like.....The wing costs $3,555 and $800 to paint it, though, not sure if the install is included in the wing price yet. I will be getting more pricing details from dealership shortly.

Taking a trip up to PP Porsche to actually see the car tomorrow.

I too am considering getting the tech art wing for my vehicle.

The pro is that it looks great. I haven't seen any in person but there is a youtube video of one and the wing really does suit the car. There is a paint option and a carbon fibre option which I find appealing.

The cons: The addition of this wing will prevent you from moving the stock wing up or down, and I also believe such a mod will void your warranty.

Thanks; I will research the warranty issue. In this case the dealership would be installing the Wing not sure if Porsche would therefore stand behind it, probably not. That is correct the stock wing stays in places but is disabled....no longer would deploy. I also thought about the carbon fiber option and I would love to see an example of it on a Miami Blue car otherwise not sure what the end result would look like. If I have it painted (Miami Blue) it would certainly look very sleek, and definitely match.....

Here is a good video outlining many of the possible techart modifications....gives a real good view of the TA Wing II

My SA just texted me back that the TA wing II will not void the warranty.....

Really? Thats interesting, I'll have to talk to my SA again :D Thats actually great news haha! So essentially the warranty will not be voided if it is installed by an official Porsche dealership?

As for the video link you attached, that is the exact one I was referring to. I think the Type II wing would look great painted in Miami Blue, it would suit your car perfectly!

I found one partial image of the TA wing II in carbon fiber. The black wing would probably go with the black side vents and the black on the lower half of the mirrors plus it would side step the need to have it painted.
That looks really good. As long as the warranty stands, I'm going to go with Carbon fiber.

thoughts from the 718 crowd
I think it evokes the Porsche GT variants (and that's probably the goal), esp. in body-color paint where it feels factory-original. It does fairly scream racer speed....

Seems like it would add a lot of downforce relative to the standard pop-up wing. Since downforce helps in the corners but hurts on the straights where it's just added drag, I wonder if that's a good trade-off for a mid-engine car that's already faster in corners/slower on straights than most of its more powerful track competition.

Purely from an aesthetic view (which I guess is more to the point)....well I think the 718 Cayman is one of the all-time design masterpieces for sports/GT coupe, up there with the best mid-engine Ferrari Berlinettas. Hard to imagine any bolt-on piece improving on those lines, but then I've always favored factory-original look in my cars and I realize that's entirely a personal subjective taste....

From those on the other end of the car-mod spectrum you will be drawing admiring looks I'm sure; enjoy!

I'm in this camp as well. I feel strongly that anything added to the car has to have a function beyond the strictly aesthetic. Regarding that wing, the first question in my mind would be: "Was it tested in a wind tunnel?"

Wings can be very, very bad things to add to a car. For instance, the wing on the Lamborghini Countach actually added several percentage points to the car's drag coefficient, actually created lift at certain speeds, and made the car far more susceptible to crosswind destablization.

As anchored wings go, that one's not bad. Would I pay $6k+ for one (I'm guesstimating installation labor here)? Only if it were fully wind tunnel tested and I were planning on driving the car regularly at the speeds for which the wing would be beneficial. Hate to say it, but I seriously doubt that wing adds anything but drag below triple-digit speeds.

Thanks for all the feedback....all sage advice. I did read were larger wings can decrease top speed by as much as 20mph.....that amount of drag, would indeed be well, a drag. The wing looks great but functionally that is its shortfall. The other information I gleaned is if you get a TechArt wing you should probably get the front aero kit to lower the car to avoid lift.....

I am not sure it would hurt the resale but resale is probably not going to be an issue.....my wife already said when I buy my next Porsche the CS is hers, and thats even before I have driven it home. You know its a bad sign when your wife tells you to start look at the configurator to design your next Porsche....

I also agree that the 718 is the best looking Cayman yet........

To Wing or not to Wing that is the question.....

I agree about the 718 Cayman--and not that it's just the best looking Cayman, but one of the best looking sports cars. I like its looks even better than the Boxster I bought--but I had to have a convertible. And second place is pretty good.

Many of the "supercars" just look (as someone said) "like they're trying too hard".

For me the wing would be a "no". A large wing just doesn't do it for me, and in conjunction with a spoiler it's just an unneeded extra, that would make the car look cheaper.

OTOH if it's what you want, go ahead, and in the car colour if you must.

I agree that its not a necessity and it doesn't increase the performance of what is already such a terrific car (unless you get the complete Techart performance upgrade).

It essentially just makes the car look cooler haha. And to each his/her own when it comes to that, Porsche is all about precision performance along with expression of preference/taste right?

I appreciate the info from everyone regarding the large wing though, I will definitely be doing more research before I make a decision.
