Been away traveling for work and rented a couple of competitor 2.0 liter engines and was very disappointment driving them. Today I came home and had to take the 718 Boxster for a spin, yes I miss my Porsche when I travel, lol. It never seems to amaze, the feeling in your stomach and you step on it, the constant push all the way from 2000 rpm to redline, what a rush. I paired this engine with the RaceChip piggy back tuner and the XLR pedal module and man, this car is a beast. I just drove the 2.5 Cayman GTS on a racetrack in Vegas and did not notice any difference in power. Maybe mine might have more low end punch. that is quite a statement. I think with the Racechip tune, there might be more torque in the 2.0 liter. (I can image putting the Racechip in the GTS model) The low end torque is what makes this car great. I can see why the 2.0 L motor was voted motor of the year. It is miles ahead of all others. Many Mustang GT's, SS Camaro's and chargers have tried, but its not even close, its almost boring, and I don't even have sports chrono, The 718 just disappears. Porsche has built a masterpiece, probably only the 911 turbo and GT3 have the better motors. Congrats Porsche for building this amazing motor and put it in a base model. Wow. Imagine owning a base 718 and have no interest to trade for a 911, Ferrari, Lambo. This is as good as it gets folks, the car is magical. Just read the new Motor Trend magazine, Cayman GTS (6cyl) vs C8 corvette. Surprise, Surprise!!! Especially since the C8 corvette defeated the 911 back in January.

It's a pretty cool engine and tops for urban driving. It matches 0-60 km/h of the GTS 4.0. If equipped with the same suspension as the GTS 4.0 (T version), it's actually faster on the figure eight (motortrend track). It's also faster 0-60km/h than the S model. It begins to lose pace 0-80, 0-100km/ h against the 2.5/4.0 litre.

i sold my 1987 ferrari 328 @ 270bhp and 3100lb. so it's sorta comparable to the boxster. however......

the boxter is hugely more comfortable and "squirts" quicker than the 328.

the looks....... i dunno . we're talkin' 40yrs. in design.

at this point, i'd say the 718 wins. but... for classic looks and streetside wow factor.. the ferrari still be on top.

i have no problems putting the boxter at streetside.

the ferrari still wins the lollipop and little paw-prints

The more I think about it, the T is super interesting car. If I had room in the garage for another 718, I think it would be a Cayman T

I would say, that in least in the UK 300bhp is the sweet spot for power. This 2.0L engine suits the Boxster and Cayman very well indeed, paired with the right options both are a very good package. They are the ultimate fun car, incredibly rewarding to drive and very addictive. Once you have experienced one, it’s very difficult to find something that gives you the same excitement every time you drive it.

I'll pile on another opinion. I agree. For "street use only", this bad boy has the perfect power to weight ratio. I ordered mine specifically to maintain the Porsche advertised 2944 lb curb weight (2019 US model). No fancy electronic suspension. 6 speed manual. Standard 2 way sport seats. No nav ......... my homage to the original 718 in GT Silver with Bordeaux trim. The original C&D tests had the "S" as only a tenth of a second faster to 60. As others have stated, for everyday driving it's a monster. Where the "S" and "GTS" shine is the 60 to 80/ 60 to 100 times. Great stuff but not too usable in everyday street driving. To each his own. Not knocking the other variants ........ they are great, but my money was better served supporting my use of the car .......... daily driver. YMMV.

I have the exact same car with two exceptions. Mine has black seats and is a 2017. We think alike.

I love the 2L engine as well and agree its the perfect amount of usable power on the street. My previous car was an F80 M3 with 450hp, considerably more than the 718. While its nice having so much power, you really cant do much with it on the street as full throttle for more than a second or two quickly has you doubling the speed limit.

I also enjoy the tuning of the 2L engine to have a power curve and feel similar to an NA engine. It pulls harder and harder as you approach red line without falling off like most turbo engines do.

hmmm, that’s what I liked about the 3.0 when I got some track time in that at PSDS in Birmingham.

people I trust love this 2.0 motor. I don’t think I’ve had enough time in one. If anyone in the DC area wants to try out the 4.0 when I get it, I’d love to get a couple of miles on a 2.0. I think from what you guys are saying I’d really enjoy a Cayman T.

Yes the 2.0 is definitely an engine that like to and needs to be revved. It does not have that huge smack of midrange torque that many turbo engines have (like in my aforementioned M3). It can feel underwhelming at first, especially if you are used to more powerful cars with a huge surge of midrange torque, but once you get to 5k+ rpm it really pulls hard.

I don't have much to compare it to recently and my memory fades on my 1965 427 Cobra. It's the one car I should have kept. lol. I also had the 1965 Shelby GT-350 at the same time (my street car). Went to VietNam in 1966: sold the 427 for twice what it cost me. Put the 350 in friends barn on blocks in case I came home. I did.
The 427 was a road demon... off the light.... cornering... top end... stability... sound... flawless in nice weather... useless when it rained (hence the 350).
Driving Bumblebee in my first rally last month brought back some of those memories. My base 2.0 takes corners with tons of power to spare. Granted I'm still braking it in and not hitting the high notes yet. Certainly looking forward to getting it to a track some day. I didn't get it to win races; I got it to have fun driving a true sports car again and I think I came up aces. Do I miss those 500 horses? Probably. I let that steed out of the barn. The Bee isn't going anywhere!
Cheers all. Thank you for letting me ramble/vent/ pontificate/etc. Giddyap lil' 2.0....
