Read more about the The Porsche 918 Spyder is Officially Old News at AutoGuide.com.Today the Porsche 918 Spyder joins the history books.
Five years after the original concept shocked those in attendance at the Geneva Motor Show, production of the 887 hp hybrid supercar has ceased with the last model rolling off the line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Just 918 of the cars were made.
The 918 Spyder now joins a list of established historic Porsche supercars that include the 904 Carrera GTS, the 959, the 911 GT1 and the Carrera GT.
But the car’s impact will be felt by far more than just the 918 owners and those whose heads snap as the car speeds by. In a release celebrating the car’s production Porsche announced that, 'the legacy of this technology pioneer will reach far beyond its production time. Future generations of sports cars will benefit directly from innovations of the 918 Spyder.'
Included in that list of innovations are manufacturing processes and hybrid cooling methods, but the most exciting element is Porsche’s announcement that future hybrid models will make use of the 918’s 'map switch' allowing for up to five different settings ranging from maximum performance, to maximum fuel economy.
While 'old news' the 918 Spyder holds the production car record on the Nurburgring with a lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds.
