A racing buddy of mine did the camping thing at LeMans a few years ago. He said it was hilarious. I would love to go but it's a busy time of year for us.

Also, as Mrs. Aeronca would be quick to point out, we go to a lot of American sports car races with our own car.

Still, if I could do LeMans and The Isle of Man, even just as a spectator, I think my racing bucket list would be almost complete (we're planning on towing to Sebring in the next few years).

A close friend of mine is running the LeMans CLassic this year (in a pretty famous Alpine). And there will be three original 718s at that event.

I mentioned it here:

Audi and Porsche are both focusing on electric as investment. Audi already in Fe and Porsche in next year. While watching Fe races is just a tad more exciting than watching a grass mowing contest, I can understand their logic. Audi dominated P1 for years and Porsche essentially the same for 3 years. There is nothing left to prove and if you really believe that they improve their brand technology through racing and they are looking at electric and hybrid, then their decision makes sense. Also, there are ocassional rumors that Porsche is taking some look at F1...........the home of hybrid. Now, as an ardent Sports Car racing fan (buttressed by being a former member of Team Rafanelli in ALMS and former Kart driver) I will miss their presence.....to be sure.

Sebring 2019 will host both the IMSA 12Hr and a round of WEC 1500 miles. That will be a great show.

On the other hand, this year's LeMans field has a record number (I believe) of Porsche entries in the 'lower' classes which don't really compete for the overall win. All street-based 911 n/a flat-sixes.

Ironic: Porsche doesn't have their 2.0 turbo-four in the running for fourth straight overall victory, and the general view is they are not in the race this year.

Also: the 919 made its debut in 2014, so figure a development period for the racing turbo V4 quad-cam flat-crank roughly 2012-2014. The 9A2B4 made a 2016 debut, figure a development period for the street turbo F4 quad-cam flat-crank roughly 2014-2016 (noting a flat engine is essentially a V with the banks canted 180-degrees). Coincidence?
