So I was hoping to make it to winter without having to replace my summer tires. But alas that is not to be. They were wearing too fast.

These are Yokohama advans and the wear rate is terrible! This tire has maybe 7000 miles on it and no track time.

They are being replaced with Michelin pilot sport 4s.

Wow. Hopefully they do an alignment and check the tire pressure when you get the new ones.

I did have an alignment done a few months ago as part of my transmission replacement. And my track tires don't have crazy wear like these do. So it is definitely the tires.

Rear right, it blew out...

I can say with absolute certainty, as I dropped to my hands and knees for inspection, that 2400 mi. before the blowout, the rears had more tread than the front ones. This lulled me into cursory inspections during the trip and everything appeared ok. Actually I was more worried about the Goodyears in the front rather than the Michelins in the back. I was planning to order Michelin PS4S N0 for the front axle (well, I did... after the blowout).

My gut feel is that the wear happened suddenly, possibly in the last couple of days, as a result of out of spec toe in (approx 0.3 of a degree symmetrically on both tires). Not having inspected the tires closely in the last couple of days, I can't be categorical about it. Just grateful that I got through it with no major consequences.

Absolutely an incredible amount of wear in such a short time! Amazing that the small amount of deviation for toe-in did this, did the dealer feel that the suspension was knocked out of alignment to have this suddenly happen?

No one is sure what caused it. The alignment, as I said before, it was off spec but symmetric. I'd postulate that it was not a drop in a pothole that caused it. The wear in each tire is almost uniform, with a slight preference towards the outside (feathering, which is consistent with off-spec toe in). The fraying at the inner edge with the sidewall is due to the (in spec) negative camber.

The estimated rate of wear for me is amazing! This was all quiet freeway driving. Maybe the tires didn't like being driven continuously for 8-9 hours...
