Yes, two pairs of skis do fit inside a 718 Cayman. You just have to know how to fit them in. My sweetie's 185's fit across the back. My 205's have to go along side my sweetie's feet.

The two bunnies have ridden with us on other local trips. The new guys is Bob the bobcat from Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge.

Today was windy, gusts to 35mph, but not so cold. A lovely day in the woods

My sweetie insists on taking pics of me. Don't know why

Of course we had to drive home

A postscript. We got over 30 mpg on the way north against such a strong headwind/crosswind that I had to work to keep the car in the lane on a few occasions. On the way home I kept it at mostly almost legal speeds and we got 35.5 mpg. I ran most of it in non-sport mode without cruise control. CC is supposed to give good mileage by holding the throttle steady but it also inhibits coast mode. Whether it is better or worse may depend on the road.

One great thing about having a nice car is you and your sweetie can go off on adventures.

Amazing that the 205s fit!!
I love the trails at Bretton Woods. They are great trails for kick and glide, unlike most VT trails that are all about climbing and descending. Very good to hear you were skiing there - I'm jealous!!? It's good that we finally have a bit of snow on the ground for you to enjoy.

One question, why not just get roof rails?
Two words, Mr. President. Plausible deniability.

Oh wait, wrong movie. Two reasons, Mr. President. I'd rather not have things hung on the outside of the car. I don't need them. I'd rather not have the skis out being pummeled by debris in the wind. I guess that's three reasons, isn't it?

Matt, sorry to be so long replying to this. Too much to do.

Yes it is sort of amazing that the skis fit but the distance from footwell to rear glass is longer than you'd think from a simple glance. Back in the autumn when considering whether to get some winter tires we had talked about doing a trip like this. So I had already checked that the skis fit.

Bretton Woods has been our winter happy place for decades. The trail system is indeed spectacular and not all flat kick & glide stuff. Our favorite trails are Beech HIll (usually we go up), Clinton, Moosehorn, Sebosis (downhill), Dark Forest, and at the end of the day the long kick-for-speed B&M for the run out. We've done all of the Ammonusic system, Mountain Road up and down, Upper Honeymoon, Tim Nash, etc. One time we came out of the woods into a 35mph crosswind at -10F, with soft snow drifts covering most of the track. That was frighteningly cold.

This recent trip was simply superb. Any time you are up for a day skiing, if the snow is good and I can get off work we should make plans to meet.

Im on a four day ski trip at Whistler right now, flew here but needed to drive a little to my friend’s house prior to us going to the airport.

Bit of advice, snowboard and skis fit great in the 718 BUT NOT THE WAY YOU DID IT. Much cleaner: put them in a ski/snowboard bag, slide the bag in from the trunk STRAIGHT THROUGH, over the engine cover/mat and between the two seats. Depending on length of skis/board/bag, the bag will come out by and between your two heads/headrests. Doesn’t interfere with driving at all, (well you can’t see out the rear view mirror) just be careful getting into the car, bumped my head once or twice. Oh and unscrew the little trunk cover that hides what’s in your trun

My prior car, Nissan 370Z, the snowboard and ski bag fit in the same way. I’ve got one soft snowboard bag that fits both the board, the skis and at least one set of boots.

i’ll try to take a picture of what it looks like when I come back Monday. I’ll post here if I don’t forget.

A word of advice:

Keep the skis, snowboards, skibags out of the car. Get roof rails if you can, get magnetic ski racks if you have to. You don't want to share a major accident with your skis. It is not smart and they are sharp!

I've used magnetic ski racks to 80 mph (130 kmh whatever it is in Good Christian Units) with no problem. They do have some safety straps you can take inside the car (another discussion topic).

Hey, Jim:
I will definitely let you know if/when we get there. It would be a lot if fun to ski with you!
......
Sorry, thought I had posted this already. It seems the forum these days needs multiple clicks to post. Will need to comment elsewhere about that.

Just a quick comment about skis. X-c skis don't have sharp edges. They are also much longer than downhill skis. I doubt they will fit as described. I do wonder about putting them under instead of over the small cross brace behind the head restraints, but I can't see them fitting that way.

My snowboard is 164, and my skis I think are 167s. They just fit in the snowboard bag. Had the board, the skis, one pair of boots, and some other things in the bag laying over the engine cover, and over the brace. As a whole, it’s largely just a relatively soft bag. And although I appreciate the comment about sharp skis, this really just becomes a long bag and wide bag that would have nowhere to go but forwards towards the windshield for something bad happen.
Not saying I do this daily, but once or twice a year should be OK. I do think the whole thing is somewhat safer when placed in a ski or snowboard bag, versus just individual skis and poles.

I have a ski bucket on my car for my DH skis and will not carry them in the car due to the safety issue. Heavy skis, nasty sharp edges, and big honkin' bindings flying around during an accident is not my idea of fun. I also disagree about the bag. I don't think it'll have any value in an accident. You're still going to get thumped by many lbs of heavy, sharp skis. With that said, my XC skis usually go in the car. No edges, lightweight everything. I'm generally not worried.

SeaSucker racks work amazingly well. I have several MTB friends (mostly BMWs, two Mini’s, a C7, and one 981 C) with SeaSuckers who regularly “fly” back & forth from San Antonio to Fruita, Moab, Grand Junction, etc. often hitting triple digit speeds along the way.

None ever experienced failure of any kind, which would be catastrophic considering most of our MTBs run $9K+. That’s a lot of faith. There’s one 996 Rennlist poster (Got the SeaSucker Ski Rack mounted to my hard top) claiming to have run “80 miles or so at speeds (on a vacant Mexican highway) in the upper 130's and the rack and skis were on there like glue.”

The SeaSucker users I know absolutely swear by the product. I’d use one too, if my bikes weren’t safely tucked away from the elements inside our Suburban.

So this is how I fit a bag with both a snowboard and skis, plus at least one set of boots, in the 718.
