Anyone know if you can undo the smoking package to remove the lighter and ash tray? I would like the original small storage bin instead. I’m hoping an iPhone will fit in the bin.

I just put my 7, in a very slender, form-fitting case, in the bin. It stands up and wobbles around, and I think would fly out over a bump. I'd recommend you test this out before you go to the trouble and expense of the swap.

My advice, don't bother. The little storage area isn't good for much other than collecting dust. I have actually thought of replacing mine with the ashtray and lid just for the cleaner lines it has.

Maybe my response came off as flippant, but the cup holder works perfectly for holding an iPhone. It's up and out of the way of the PCM and the screen is oriented well for driver use. The phone is also very secure in the deathgrip of the holder ;p

I put my phone in the driver's door pocket. Fits really well and is out of the way.

Thanks for the suggestion about the cup holder. That may actually work for the few times I need something. Normally my phone is in my pocket, and it is a rare occasion I need to put it somewhere in the car. I don't like using the arm rest compartment because 100% of the time I forget to take my phone back out. Normally I'll just throw it on the passenger seat if I need to, but sometimes that's not available if covered with a briefcase, laundry, etc. There's times I have resorted to just putting it on my lap as I drive, but that's annoying. Cup holder is a good idea in a pinch.

I just swapped out my OE bin for the ashtray at the same time I put in the short shift. Looks way better, cleaner lines. The bin is too small for anything and looks like an afterthought IMHO.

I put my phone in the armrest so that I can plug in the carplay - and would rather have the lid over the compartment, purely from an aesthetic perspective.
