Until recently, I had a 2013 Boxster S that I LOVED (Pic Below).

Then one night, I was out looking at Christmas lights with my wife. While going about 3 miles an hour I ran into a curb. Not only did it trash the lower bumper, it managed to smash the radiator and I lost my coolant really quickly. Once I realized what had happened I shut the car down. I took the following pic after the car was pulled on the wrecker:

I THOUGHT that the car would need a new bumper cover and radiator. Figured it would be in the shop for about a week.

Not how it worked out. Once the front end was disassembled, it was found that the lower frame on the tub that is the front trunk was bent in about 3 mm for a section less than an inch in length.

This being at a Porsche Approved repair facility means they have to follow Porsche procedures which require REPLACEMENT of that frame section turning this into a $20K repair. This being a 2013 with 140K miles on it (I drove the fire out of this car!) I was surprised when the insurance company valued it at $29k plus $2K for taxes, Still, this was a total.

I was devastated.

After it settled in that my favorite car I have ever owned (I have owned 21 cars to this point) was no more, I started looking at options. I was not a fan of the move to the flat-4 turbo and as such I started looking at 2016s. Found a gorgeous GTS in Houston that I almost bought but then I told myself I had to at least look at 718s first hand.

My wife and I found a CPO 2017 Boxster S at a local dealership. Shown below:

Two days later, I bought it. But I don't have it yet. Wife and I were leaving 2 days later for Hawaii so I left it to have clear film installed. We get back in town on Christmas Eve. The dealer is leaving it where I can pick it up on the way home.

I am super excited (this will probably end when I see my new insurance rates :( )

As to the car itself it is well optioned with Sport Chrono, PDK, LCA, Prem Pack Plus, Nav, Sports Exhaust, heated and cooled seats, keyless start.

Noticeably missing is PASM and at least Bose.

I am OK with no Bose I am going to have an aftermarket system (amp, better speakers, etc)

I am wondering about not having PASM.

On day 2, I am planning on disconnecting the Soundaktor.

Any other suggestions?

Sorry for the long novel here.

Love the color....

Cannot comment on insurance rates other than to say that there was no change in my insurance going from a BMW 335 to a Miata and then on to a 718. Under normal circumstances might even find that there is a drop given improved safety features in a more updated car. Although likely offset by the recent accident that you had. My understanding is that the bulk of insurance is based on liability and not as much to car value (within reason - but a boxster S is still within reason)

Would also love to hear your comments on the car once you have had a chance to enjoy it. As one of those that was turned off to the flat 4 would be interested in hearing your opinion.

First congrats on your new ride. However I am curious about the slow speed curb hit and the damage that was done that would result in a $20k repair. Maybe you can expand on that a little. Couldn't the repair have been done much less expensively by an indie shop with perfectly acceptable results?

Also, you must have taken the 718 for a ride. What convinced you it was the right move vs purchasing the 981 GTS? Was it purely the idea the 718 would be under full warranty? Or did the test drive of the 718 factor into it?

Congratulations on buying a great looking 718, but I am a bit curious...
It is clear that common sense made you also look at a 718, but what made you change your mind and convince you to actually purchase one when you had reservations on the flat-4?

To your PASM question @soldsco, the description of the SC functions, it sounds like a form of PASM is included, but without the body lowering. When I had my base car built, I included both SC and PASM but apparently many folks do not include PASM with SC.

Well here is the quandary that everyone with a Porsche faces when you have body work needed. If you go to a Porsche certified shop, you are more likely to have a repair that is completely undetectable and will have the smallest impact upon the residual value of the car. This unfortunately can work against you on situations such as this. Porsche is pretty stringent about damage to any frame type component many of the components requiring replacement if damaged. I understand their thinking in that these components are all considered relevant for crash performance (i.e crumple zone performance). While random shops can decide to do what they want with damage like this, Porsche can at least guarantee some predictability of repair on the shops they certify.

So for my car, given I hit the curb at 3 mph I had no idea that would introduce enough energy to bend a frame component.

To repair this would require the entre front end be disassembled including dropping the entire front end and then cutting out several frame components just to get to the damaged component. All this would have to be done while on what is called a 'bench' to ensure the car maintains proper dimensional integrity. Given all of labor and materials involved, I am not surprised at the $20k estimate.

As to going with the 718, there were many factors involved. One it was LOCAL and I wouldn't have to travel to Houston (as would have been the plan for the GTS I was considering. The irony here is that I bought my 981 in Houston). I REALLY liked the low end torque of the 718. I liked and my wife loves the Graphite Blue Metallic paint color. I have had multiple red cars and it was time for a change. I am also ready for an updated PCM and associated technology of the 718 vs the 981. For example, the nav on the 718 is light years ahead of the 981s.

I am not thinking that SC really does much to the suspension of a car without PASM. PASM equipped cars are able to dynamically adjust the dampening on the fly to each wheel individually. Without it, the dampening cannot be adjusted on the fly so there really isn't the SC package can do.

As I understand, most cars are ordered by dealerships for sale on the lot (i.e. not custom orders for a specific customer) aren't ordered with PASM.

First, Welcome and congrats on the new ride :)

I have the feeling that many are getting fooled by SC and what it can do.
Porsche present it as a "Go Fast" thing and we swallow every word thinking it will be a rocket with SC
Pasm/Spasm on the otherhand only sounds as a comfort thing, who needs that in a sport car.

If i had to choose between them i would take Pasm, imho

SC also adds - "Dynamic transmission mounts are also part of the Sport Chrono Package. The electronically controlled system minimizes the perceptible oscillations and vibrations of the entire drivetrain and combines the benefits of a hard or soft transmission mounting arrangement to offer a sporty yet comfortable cornering experience. In short, it enhances both driving stability and driving comfort." Would this otherwise be perceptible from a car not equipped with SC? Who knows.
