Upgrade Wireless CarPlay for My 718

I was a little bit annoyed that I had to have my phone plugged in to get my CarPlay to work in my car. I got a refer from my friend with a smart dongle. I purchased carlinkit 4.0 that converts the CarPlay connection into wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.
Ever since getting this I’ve had absolutely few problems, sound quality is good and haven't seen any audio/video lag. It has truly improved my entire car audio experience. Works great, and is a decent price for what it brings, less than $85.
Once you set up the dongle, get into your car and turn on the car, and without connecting your phone to the car by cable, you’ll have CarPlay pop up. Plug and play, takes about 30 seconds to boot up and is actually pretty quick. Exactly like wired carplay! I can't believe how easy it was to set up!
I am so excited and would like to sharing this. I LOVE HAVING WIRELESS CARPLAY! I will keep updating here!

Just added this over the weekend and thus far working as advertised. Too soon to report any hiccups.

And not to leave us luddites using Android devices befuddled and envious, there are several that will do the same for us. AAWireless, Motorola MA1 and Carsifi. 718 headunits that don't support AA can be hacked to add the feature. Search the forum for semaservis1108. He, and others, do it remote via a USB flash.

The "T-Box Mini", another option, is made by the CarLinkIt company referred to by the OP. It is, essentially, a wireless Android Auto hardware box that connects to our CarPlay capable PCM. It also functions as a full Android tablet with the PCM functioning as its screen. Twice the price of the dongles but bypasses the need to hack the headunit
I really need to look into this as I've been upgrading everything else except the audio

Shouldn't have said anything. Mine worked for the trip out to the store but no CarPlay on the way back. Uplugged and/or reset everything I could think of, but nope. I bet that it will work the next time I try.

How's your's working now? Thinking of ordering for my 2022 GTS. The website only lists Porsche 718 MY 2017-2021 as compatible, but I don't think there is any difference between 2021 and 2022?

Also, even my wired CarPlay seems to have hiccups at times. Drove yesterday and it started up fine, but after I disconnected the phone to activate GasBuddy and plugged back in, I couldn't get CarPlay to reconnect.

As predicted, it worked perfectly next time. Based on what I have observed, the issues are pretty much entirely with the Porsche end of things. The issues don't seem to be restricted to wireless, because when I lose it I lose the wired CarPlay too. Mine is the Ottocast, not the Carlin, but for all I know they are the same under the skin.

Hi Kor,

I have the carlink3 and have an Iphone - it works splendidly and as it should for our cars and there are many/many threads on this same subject within this forum.

The new carlink4 offers more and or better Andriod connection - from what I can see and others users here with Andriod have all advised how that has then transformed their cars.

For me personally, I now use this almost solely in my 718, music, maps via WAZE, dictated and read-back texts etc etc.

There are literally hundreds of different dongles out there, all stating they do the same, all varying in prices hugely. The only reason I went with this version in the end was all the positive reviews within this forum and I have not been disappointed in the slightest.

Hope this assists in some small way.

I would most definitely call it an enhancement rather than an upgrade
Do you notice any sound quality difference playing music / podcasts through this wireless CarPlay setup vs. being plugged directly via USB?
Absolutely not.
I have the bose - like it or leave it, personally I like it but it’s also set up how I want it.
all the dongle does is achieve wireless CarPlay here so should not and does not then affect sound quality.
much bad reviews on the Bose btw, I had the high end system on my last merc. What I now have with the Bose imho is far better than that and even with me blasting around at semi full rush I can still very much appreciate the tunes I am then playing.

I used both Apple Maps and Google Maps and both responded as we expected. There was no lag in getting directions and the touchscreen was as responsive as with a wired connection.
Even using Siri was effortless. I was able to ask Siri for directions while driving and they popped up on the screen in a few seconds. lol.

Well after this morning, I just ordered it.....

.....I went to the Porsche dealership to get an oil filter and they asked to valet my car to the parking deck. Of course, I forgot my phone in the car because of WIRED car play and while I was at the parts counter, got an important call. I looked like a fool answering on my Apple watch, yelling into my wrist like a drunken Dick Tracy.

But I got the last laugh. The 6'2" valet kid that brought my car back and practically gave himself a hernia trying to get out of my LWB seats. I let him struggle for a bit before I told him to slide the seat back using the lever under the seat front. He had just come over from a Mercedes dealership and after he finally got out, said "we didn't have anything like this at Mercedes".

Looking forward to wireless CarPlay. The company responded quickly yesterday confirming that the 4.0 version is good for 2022 model year, they just hadn't updated their compatibility chart that showed 2017 to 2021.

So again chaps,
ver 3 - very good and works very well for iPhone
ver 4 - from reviews and not personally, is the one to go for for andriod And totally surpasses the v3 for that here.
do not spend any extra for the 4 - imho - if you have an iPhone Would be my advise.
