What do you think the proposed 35% US tariff on German cars would do to the Porsche sports cars such as 718 and 911 vs Porsche SUVs Cayenne and Macan?

VW/Audi/Porsche does not have US plants whereas BMW and Mercedes can transform their SUV plants to include other cars.

If it happens I hope it happens after my car makes it in the country. The car is on the boat right now. If they try to slap a 35% price hike on it I won't buy it. I'll feel bad for the dealer, but I'm not paying an extra 35% for my car.

I’m excited!

My 2023 electric Porsche will be built somewhere in South Carolina. Already planning my US delivery with a run around Virginia International Raceway, followed by a road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Now we just need to build a few more castles like the Biltmore.

Spartanburg is the new Stuttgart!

Oops ... forgot about self driving cars obliterating everybody....no Porsche for me....

Actually I’m really curious how this plays out. I’m driving my fully paid for 718C GTS around Europe right now. Figure tariffs might be hitting just as I import back to the States. It will be interesting if I have to figure out what to do about paying a large ( or any) tariff on a car I have already bought and used. Sort of seems like getting a bill after the fact.

We’ll see....

VW has a plant in Chattanooga, TN, where they build the Passat and Atlas and are gearing up for another SUV line. It does not seem likely they would re-tool to build Porsche sports cars but maybe the SUV models...

I’m irritated. But the issue will affect the parts of the cars assembled outside the United States, and a lot are. We are in the market for an suv and we’re looking at the Atlas or Cayenne. But I hope we don’t get affected prices

My older daughter just bought an Atlas. Really nice vehicle. Also, surprisingly huge. My grandkids like the "wayback" seat. :)

Concerning to me is these tariffs can be imposed immediately and if you need proof look a few months back with the tariffs levied on Steel and Aluminum and it was imposed invoking "section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 which permits the US to impose tariffs for national security reasons".

Agree.

And my concern is that this is being done without any careful strategy.

I mean I can fully understand if there is a calculated plan that was intended to leverage a positive outcome for the US. But this just looks willy-nilly to me.

And a lot of conservative and progressive politicians seem flummoxed by it too. I'm surrounded by smart people with all sorts of viewpoints on politics and none of us can make any sense of this.

And then, maddeningly, there's this:

How Donald Trump Ditched U.S. Steel Workers in Favor of China

I doubt you would be affected. You've already paid all of the sales tax and the full price of the car. Worst case, Porsche NA just eats the tariff costs if it impacts sold, but not yet imported, inventory.

An extra $10k that I didn't budget for? Cuz Trump? No.
My 718CGTS is at the Emden port. I am not paying $.01 more than what I negotiated.
As far as future value is concerned, if the prices do go up, future administrations will remove the imposed tariffs and you will have a 1-2 year batch of overpriced cars.
Value of cars already in the market will go up. New and Used.

I communicated with the sales manager and he is a nice, honorable fellow and basically indicated that this tariff should not affect the pricing this year but may come into effect in any new deal post Trump imposed tariff and my response to him was......."in the event of a "tariff" just refund my deposit and the Porsche brand and I will permanently part ways.
Not personal just business."

I've been considering ordering a 911S or Cayman GTS. My local dealer gets a $10,000 deposite on cars with over $100,000 MSRP & $5,000 if under $100,000. If I cancelled because of the 35% I don't think I would get the deposite back. I never ordered a car so I haven't read the fine print. I was also wondering if I died would the dealer refund the deposite to my estate?

Separate from all this other stuff, that's nice to hear. I have exactly the same feeling about the sales person I bought my car from.

Which is partly why I'm bothered by a tariff that seems to be created so haphazardly. I'm sure most people who sell cars need those sales to pay their mortgage, credit card bills, etc. Lots of unintended consequences for tariffs. These type of actions have real affects on real people.

U.S. is half the global market for Porsche. Would they just walk away from half their revenue base, or will they negotiate a deal to build a new factory(s) in U.S. in exchange for reduced tariff (or voluntary export limits in lieu of tariffs) on made-in-Germany cars? So in the end prices will go up slightly, by an amount carefully calculated not to alienate the U.S. market (loss of a few unit sales to 718Forum members won't upset that equation). We're already paying a kind of indirect made-in-Germany tax, we just think of it as a premium on the Porsche marque prestige.

This phase is just posturing by both sides. The EU basically invited this by ignoring a U.S. deadline to negotiate voluntary limits on steel exports where they enjoy a $23 Billion surplus. That kind of trade imbalance between 'allies' is not healthy, I have no problem with playing hardball to force German carmakers et al to invest some of their record profits in American plants and jobs. Though I still want to drive German-engineered cars....I'd prefer more of them (SUVs!) be built here. Credit BMW in this context for having the foresight to build cars in South Carolina.

I guess then, that Harley's being built in Thailand are not such a bad thing.

If I were in Japan or Australia and wanted and original Made in the USA Harley, I wouldn't be happy if my choice came out of Thailand or one made in any other country than the US. My Jack Daniels made in New York City or anywhere other than Lynchburg, TN. Certain products have a history that add to their value, quality and prestige.

Point taken, but consider this. My 987 Boxster S was the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I kept it far longer (12 years) than any other. In fact that sheer reliability and implicit build-quality influenced my decision for a 718 more than anything else.

Where was that classic Porsche flat-six built? In Finland. Read about Valmont, interesting stuff. Sometimes human psychology (like, say, affinity for Stuttgart-built Porsches or n/a flat-six engines) gets the better of human rationality.
