I’ve finally updated my Mobile and brought an iPhone.

I see to get Apple Car Play to work you have to connect it via a cable to the USB Slot in the Centre Console.

Is it safe to leave the USB Cable plugged in when the car is parked up without the phone connected, is the cable live ?

By leaving it plugged in with nothing connected will it be a drain on the car’s battery, if the car is not used for a week or so. ?

It would be a pain to have to keep pulling the cable out of the USB Slot every time you got out of the car.

I take it “Apple Car Play” won’t work via Bluetooth in a Porsche yet.

The cable does not draw power if it is not connected to anything. It acts just like an extension cord in that regard.

And no: wireless CarPlay doesn't work in Porsches. The technology requires both Bluetooth and WiFi to be present and active. Only 718s with the top-tier Infotainment option have WiFi, and as it works now in PCM4, CarPlay disengages Bluetooth when it activates.

Muppet, ditto on Viffermike. I actually bought a used iPhone 7 for exclusive use in Carmen the Cayman. One big reason is that it is awkward for chunky guys like me to plug and unplug the phone, and I like to have it there for using Google Maps when I'm out and about. I haven't had it in the car for extensive time yet because of the cold temperatures here in Kentucky, USA, however I did leave the phone on overnight and the phone didn't seem to lose much battery charge. I'll probably turn it off when it is in my garage for multiple undriven days. My car is not a DD. It does charge up the phone nicely when driving. I also pair the phone with a Dual XGPS 160 to improve the accuracy of the navigation when the phone is in the armrest.

Because I would like to replay some of my country road trips, I'm playing with an app called Speedometer55 Pro. It will work in the background and I can start it tracking with a Siri voice command. You can then export the trip as a KMZ file to Google Earth and see speeds at different locations, in turns, etc.

I have left a cable plugged into mine since I have owned it with no issues

same here. unless you connect an iphone/ipod/ipad to it the cable does nothing with regard to power consumption.

AFAIK all USB points remain live for about 10 minutes after the car is turned off then they also turn off.

I leave the cord plugged into the car and leave it hanging down alongside the driver's seat ready for plugging in when necessary. When I got the car two years ago, I'd plug the phone in, place it in the console and then (9 times out of 10) get out of the car and forget to take the phone.

I also don't like car play because in the UK it disables the phone connections for the steering wheel buttons which I use frequently, and also because I have the wheel diamond to skip to the next track when using Jukebox, and when the phone is plugged in, that function is disabled also.

Hence, I only use the charge cable to actually charge the phone up if needs be.
