Since I'm still sorta new most don't know that my side hustle is Hyphen Studios. One of the things I offer for my clients is vinyl decals. I have a 60" plotter to make large decals for vehicle graphics or signage. If you've ever seen a HUGE lifted SEMA truck on TV or in a magazine and see sponsor decals on the back window most likely my son and I did them. Meaning we cut the decals and installed them on the vehicle. We get the 2D models of the trucks, get the logos of the customers sponsors, and then layout them digitally for precise fitment before we cut and install them.

Anyways, I acquired the Porsche shield artwork from Porsche's own marketing material guideline documentation sent to dealers. I didn't even have to trace or redraw the shield. I was extremely shocked that this was out in the wild. So, I cut the shield using two didn't types of vinyl. Cheap "economy" brand, and a high end brand (3M). This helpful bit is in reference to calendared vinyl and not "wrap" vinyl. That's a WHOLE other topic, and I for one for sure have my biases on it. Well, I have my biases on calendared vinyl as well.... Pictured below are the two types of vinyl. The top is the 3M vinyl, and the bottom is the "economy" vinyl.

3M Facts
  • You can wet apply it
  • Has a longer shelf life (typically 7 years, and could be longer if the products isn't in the direct sun every day)
  • Material is super thin and uses 3M's patented adhesive
  • HUGE PIA to remove (get the heat gun out)
  • Easier to get rid of bubbles after application if you make an OOPS

"Economy" Facts
  • Cheaper
  • Shelf life is about half what 3M is
  • Don't wet apply - only dry apply
- You can try to wet apply, but if the vinyl lifts from the transfer paper you will have to play the waiting game. Along with hoping that the adhesive starts to work.
  • Easier to remove
  • Thicker material
  • Use these types of vinyl if installing over PPF (paint protection film)

None of them. IMO there are enough shields on the car already to negate the need to add more. I also think that adding the shields in the suggested areas feels a bit like copying Ferraris shield placement (and let's not forget that Ferrari copied the Porsche 'prancing horse' logo).
Agreed. You have shield on front, "PORSCHE" on back, likely "718 Cayman GTS" on back, "GTS" on the side. Doing too much cosmetic detail like that makes me think of what the owner of a cheaper car does to compensate.

As said, none of them. Why put stickers on a Porsche.

I worked for 32 years with adhesives and films and printable topcoats, company was bought over several times and was owned by 3M for around ten years before they closed it. I do not have fond memories of them.

Apparently Porsche isn't that worried about having their logo out an about.
On their own website they use their logo in SVG format so it can scale infinitely, and I have also though about using this as a source for some wall decor in my garage.
Just for proof of concept I have rendered it to the attached JPG in a larger size than what is being used on the website, higher resolution is of course also possible.
It might not be spot on what's on the cars, but it is pretty close.

@alf_17 - Right?! I was completely surprised at this. When I've done decal work for some of the big show trucks it's a huge event to get some manufacturers to even send me their logo. And half the time I have to redraw the logo because they don't want people to have their official logo.... Such a pain sometimes

@Nosmo - 3M is always my go to.

So rather than a shield I did an eyebrow across the top of the windshield. I was a little unsure about adding the shield, and it felt good to cut something / make something for the GTS... So I may just skip the shield for now. I'm working on recreating the PORSCHE stripes for the lower part of the car (the gt4 stripes). I just saw what Suncoast wants for them.... My cost to people would be almost half that... Maybe a tad more with free shipping. HAHA!

I will post a before and after of the eyebrow.

I did the windshield and it looks great. When my top is up and everything looks black the lettering make the windshield look shorter. Gives it an aggressive look

My windshield is also tinted

I've been very conservative in my choice of car colors over many years. However, part of me wants an outrageous color only because this is my first, and likely last sports car. A vinyl wrap affords that opportunity without a full and final commitment. If you have the coin, I'd say go for it. Best part is you can go back when you are tired of it.

Are you sure about that? Ferrari uses the prancing horse since 1929, but Porsche was only founded in 1931.

No, i'm not 100% sure on that but do remember reading it somewhere (but then again one shouldn't believe everything one reads). Your question prompted me to do some digging though and, while the Scuderia Ferrari racing team was founded in 1929, they didn't start using the prancing horse logo until 1932. Although it looks like Porsche didn't use their crest on a car until 1952. So I guess the original article I based my comments on was incorrect.

The prancing horse is in the Stuttgart coat of arms since 1490 (at least). Here is one from a manuscript ca. 1530

Interestingly enough, Stuttgart comes from the words Stute (female horse) and Garten (garden), Duke Ludolf of Schwaben founded, according to legends, in 950 a horse breeding center and riding school on the spot of the present city.

In the link you will find many renditions of the prancing horse, some remarkably similar (and pre-dating) the Ferrari prancing horse.
