What Features Do You Never Use?

6993 Views 113 Replies 54 Participants Last post by  224 PJ
I've always been fascinated by how long I can own a car and not use a specific feature, or touch a certain button. In some cases I've owned a car for years and literally never touched some buttons or levers (except for occasional cleaning).

What's in your car that you've never used?

I'll start. I've only owned my car for 6 months, but so far I've never used:
  • Headlight switch. It was in "Auto" when I picked up the car and haven't touched it since.
  • Windshield wiper stalk.
  • Cruise control stalk.

(So you do not need a light switch.)

I don't have a cylinder-deactivation switch so obviously I have never used it.

I have only owned my car for one year; but I have not used the cruise control. I have utilized the headlights due to some tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I actually use the heated steering wheel more then I initially anticipated. Wipers have only been used once. Great car - 22 Cayman GTS 4.0

Never use:
  • Analog speedometer
  • Sports Chrono timer in middle of the dash--cool looking but useless
  • Audio system--I only listen to 6-cylinder music
  • Sports exhaust--top down driving is loud enough
  • Any of the distracting "performance" features on the right-side display: G-meter, power meter, gear/upshift indicator
I hear you on the wipers! I have done that on other tuner cars in the past! I used to have my car club's logo on the lower portion of the windshield during shows - removed them and never reinstalled them.

For the blower motor - if your speaking of the A/C... you can use the key button on your door to program the car to your liking based on the key you're using. I hope that helps! I don't mean to offend if you already knew that.
I have been trying to figure this out FOREVER, even asked the dealer how to defeat the blower coming on when starting the car. Tried your instructions above and voila no more blower motor coming on when starting my car!
THANK YOU!!

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. How do you disable it? Can't find any way in any of the menus.
Hmm. Would PPF on the lights help prevent that no matter what the cause(s) is (are). What is the condition of light covers for those who don’t have washer option for the light covers. Common sense has me thinking that big bright yellow thing in the sky might have more to do with the marks on the covers than rain or washer fluid (not that they have no effect). Sprinkle that with time and you have many suspects.
At risk of taking this on an off-topic tangent (i.e. "What features do you never use..."):

Based on my experience with my 2009 BMW with bi-xenon headlamps and plastic lenses over 200,000+ miles, the lenses don't really heat up from the headlight bulbs. Sunshine, maybe, but doubtful the arc bulbs. There's very little thermal mass in a composite lens, and there's a lot less heat coming from the bulb than you'd get with a filament-style bulb. +1 for UV as the primary driver behind the lens degradation, followed by grit from the road (on higher-mileage, esp. highway miles, cars).

I think it's noteworthy that anytime you do a headlight lens restoration, it's critical to apply a UV protectant to the now-restored lens. Mostly this is to prevent yellowing, but I believe that's the first thing that would happen, with the crazing coming later?

Auto Stop/Start. I know this has become popular or mandatory to help improve gas mileage. I hate this feature on every car I have ever driven that had it. In the four weeks I've driven my 2022 manual S, I always keep the clutch pedal depressed when stopped out of habit from all my other manuals that never had this feature, so I didn't even realize it was there even though I saw the button illuminate. I also resent the fact that it cannot be permanently disabled, but instead has to be shut off every time you start a vehicle with that feature.

I bought the module that keeps remembers the last button settings so the auto start stop feature is always off. I do use the auto cruise control all the time and it’s handy in traffic. I very rarely use sport exhaust.
Used the CD once, to check it actually worked, never since.
Not used the lap timer, or. launch control, or the G meter.
The analogue speedometer is pointless, I never look at it.
Probably other things.

I agree and if everyone was aware of this it would really enhance the driving experience

Fire extinguisher and sports chrono.
Sport Chrono was one of the options I thought about a lot, but ultimately passed on (non-GTS model). SC offers some pretty cool technology, but when I evaluated it feature by feature, I concluded I had little use for it, especially with Sport Mode included as standard in all 718s. The one feature I found the most attractive was the dynamic engine mounts (PADM), but I wasn't going to pay just for that one feature, especially with questions about PADM reliability. Strictly speaking, I guess it can be said that you do you use SC, since PADM is always on.
