Ok I know WHERE the sound is I just can't really hear it!

I have a 718 Cayman GTS. I've put about 2500 miles on it and have been very attentive to the sound given all the negative press. I kept my 987.1 Boxster and have driven them back to back multiple times just to compare sound.

From inside the car, I really don't hear the proximity of the engine. With the 987, you know the engine is right behind you. With the 718, the engine sounds a mile away. I'm thinking maybe there is just so much sound insulation that it deadens the sound of the engine. ( That would help explain the soundaktor nonsense on the base and S PSE.)

Has anybody taken a look at the sound insulation or tried removing it for a less distant/muffled sound in the cabin area?

Edit: I cut this post down because it was way too long. Maybe I’ll get a response now. :)

Give it 10,000 miles, you'll hear it. Let it bed in.

The sound improved for me starting at around 4.5K and kept getting better after that. Sold it with 7.3K miles.
This is good to know. I just past 3000 miles and can tell the difference from new. I have only had the car for 5 weeks so I remember what is sounded like when I first got it. Now I have another reason to put more miles on my car:)

You guys are serious that the sound changes as mentioned above?

Never heard of such a thing, but hesitantly happy to hear of it now - assuming I am not in on some hidden joke.

Mine car sounds great as is at 2200 miles, and if it gets even better then all the better!

I have 5500 miles on my Cayman. The sound I really hear is tire noise, especially in more textured roads. When I picked it up new, in Atlanta and drove it home (to NJ), the tire noise was the first thing I noticed.

Overall, our Cayman is louder inside than our 2018 GMC cargo van, which has a bare-metal interior. Tire noise in the Porsche forces us to turn the radio up louder than we normally would. Sometimes, I will plan a route that favors smoother (quieter) roads, if possible.

To my ears, the 718 engine makes a soft, burbled sound most of the time. Not objectionable at all. When you really get on it, the engine sound is obviously louder, but with a nice basso profundo. Very appealing to me.

I like the sound of the 6 cylinder Boxter/Cayman. But the sound of the 4 cylinder 718 is also appealing.

When people get all exercised over the sound of the newer Porsche 4, it reminds me of "The Princess and The Pea". :)

I'm at 12,000 miles on my 2017 CS and it definitely sounds more 'growly' and a bit louder than it did when new. So IMO the sound does change as the miles get added. I didn't notice any change in the first 5,000 miles though. It became noticable around 9,000-10,000 miles.

I guess I will wait a bit longer and see if the sound becomes more prominent. As I mentioned, it's not so much that it is soft or unpleasant sounding but more that it just sounds "distant" It doesn't sound like I have an engine right behind me like it does in my 987. It sounds like somebody threw a blanket over the engine, that is why I think it may be an overabundance of sound deadening material.

I probably won't do much fishing around until I am out of the warranty period. In general, I am not a fan of "modifying" my cars in any way until after the 4 years. I've got other things to mess with.

Thanks for the responses so far.

If you dont know what the 981 mod is, its really easy to fix.
Just move the pipe between the mufflers so there is a small gap.

On 981 and models before the mufflers are identical but on 718 the one on the passanger side is the loud one.
So in sport mod or PSE open the car gets louder over all.
You can take it in step further and that is to disengage the PSE valve.
Without the 981 PSE alway open aint gonna do much but with, you get a massive growls :)
After i did this on my CS i have had several Porsche owners asking what kind of exhaust i was using and where they can buy it.

2-3mm open
