I am warming up to a Boxster GTS after my wife remarked that the Miami Blue and Lava Orange look better on the Boxster than the Cayman. Both are beautiful cars.

Did most of you buy the Boxster because you're convertible fans? I have a Miata soft-top and enjoy open top motoring. But I do live in Texas, so there are a lot of months where the top will be up.
I worry a bit about visibility. Is visibility (with top up) in traffic okay or challenging?

Texas?
Is it Cold there?
In Sweden we drive with top down even in the Winter!

View in the rearview mirror is better in Boxster, aluminium interior can cause terrible reflections by the sun.
Cayman aint anywhere near as loud as the Boxster (good or bad?)

I have a 986 and then i bought 718 BS, that i parked in the Woods (**** Moose) and after that i went with a 718 CS.
The reason that i did the change was not because i did not like the Boxster, but since i have the 986 i already have a convertible.
So for daily driving, spirited driving and track i choose the CS first and 986 is more for pleasure driving.

Do i miss my 718 Bs, sometimes, do i regrett going with CS, Nope!

I never had a pure convertible before my 987 Boxster S, but I had a Ferrari 328 GTS (S as in Spyder -- actually a removable Targa-style roof panel). For all its reliability and cost-to-maintain issues, the Ferrari had a fun-to-drive and feels-fast quotient that exceeded the pair of newer, more-powerful Carreras which followed. I attributed this mainly to two things: mid-engine and open-air. So I traded 'down' the Porsche hierarchy, found Ferrari-levels of fun-to-drive and feels-fast (though with more is-fast) and kept that car a dozen years until the 718 Boxster came along actually looking more like a Ferrari and going more like one, too -- at least to my limits as a driver to exploit.

To be honest, top-up visibility is poor (rear-quarter is the issue), even worse than the 987. I rarely drive top-up, but mine is not a commuter car. LCA would likely help.

But to answer your title question @chester -- I never considered a Cayman, my choice was Boxster over Carrera Cabriolet, and I always thought the latter was disadvantaged aesthetically, top-down, by the rear-seats and rear-engine hump.

My first car was a convertible and have always loved the vibe of top down cruising. If I already owned a convertible when looking at a 718 in the summer of 2017 I may have gone the Cayman route but honestly, after a year of ownership, I think the Boxster has sexier lines even with the top up.

@Gutwrecher- I agree the Boxster has better lines.
@Scubaregs- Women do rule the world, through us men. And I love it!
@All- Thanks for the great responses.

I did see a Miami Blue Boxster GTS at the local Austin dealer and that's the car what my wife saw and instantly loved.

I really liked the hips of the 986 so I bought one new in 2001 which I still have and drive. The 986 didn't have a Cayman brother so the choice was easy. I think the 718 Boxster is one of those very rare cars that has great lines top up or down. Truth be told I don't drive the 718 a lot with the top down, just having the option seems to suit when the mood strikes.

I've a handful of must-haves in any car I've ever owned: Convertible is 1st among them. (Manual gearbox, non-black interior, and RWD make the list as well.) I never considered a Cayman as the first sunny day I'd find myself with a v/ expensive car that made me sad. I 100% understand everyone that would want the full metal bubble, it's just not for me. Just got my custom order 2019 BS and couldn't imagine a more perfect ride for what I love in car.

I really wanted the convertible for trips to the beach (I'm about an hour away) and I like the lines better on the Boxster than the Cayman.

I chose the Cayman GTS. I just love the fast back style. The convertible won't do. I have a sun roof in my daily, and I almost never use it. Can't handle the sun beating down on me any more. But If they gave me a 10 k discount on the boxter GTS I wouldn't say no Both are awesome cars
