Here's an article that provides some background on this decision.
Porsche chooses Apple CarPlay because Google reportedly asks for too much data
Google later denied this.
Google denies Android Auto car system sends it user's driving data
We'll probably never know the real reason. But in most decisions like this, you can usually follow the money.
I have an Android phone and would like them to support this too.
Good catch. If true, wonder what they do with the data. But I would happily trade that info to gain the functionality of Waze and the use of the car's display for maps. What I don't agree with is Porsche making the decision for me. Just tell me what's being captured and let me decide if I'm OK with it. Porsche is not my mother, so I doubt they are doing this for my benefit. I'm sticking with the money angle. Thanks for the info. It's interesting that according to the article, Google does not deny collecting vehicle speed and engine RPM.
Of course for that to be done you'd have to believe what Google says. Do you believe what Facebook says? (I don't believe either of them.)Good catch. If true, wonder what they do with the data. FYI, and you may already be aware, but Facebook is using those logins to track you. In fact, they even track non-facebook users, simply by tracking when the facebook login/share plugin is loaded.Lack of trust is one reason why my Facebook page is blank. I just use Facebook as a login authenticator for those sites that require it.
A lot of that Android market share is with lower income demographics that cannot afford a Porsche.I see the Cayman has Apple CarPlay as an option, but not Android Auto. Why? Android has a much larger mobile market share relative to Apple IOS, 77% vs. 20% worldwide.
It looks to me like you can retrofit Android Auto. At least this guy was able to do it some how:

Would be good to hear others who have been able to get Android on their PCM.
Personally, I just want to be able to use Google Maps but I'm also an Android phone user.
I am yet to find an OEM NAV system that works as well as Google Maps in a busy city with a lot of traffic.
We have the latest Idrive and maps on our BMW but it is really slow for some reason to update routes due to traffic and by the time it suggests an alternate route we are already stuck. Not sure if the Porsche PCM is any better, but Google Maps seems to do it instantaneously and usually always picks the fastest route.
In the US having Waze has been great. Waze + a good radar detector is a solid way to avoid "Imperial entanglements", as Obi-Wan once said. For me in Sweden, Google and Waze aint any good at all while Apple Maps works as a Nav should do.
Roads blocked cause accidents, alot of traffic etc Apple maps got that right while the other to does not....
Yes it is -- as is being able to actually read an incoming SMS instead of being forced to hear PorschAlexa try to read it. That's the biggest perk for me.But, I do love the Apple Maps/Apple Watch integration. If you haven't experienced it - you get subtle haptic signals on your watch when your next turn is coming up. It's very cool.
