Why the 718 is More Than a Worse Boxster...

We know the 718 will be using a reworked boxster chassis but it wont be a WORSE boxster.

Lightweight body panels, simpler instrument pannel, manually adjustable seats, lower windshield, thinner glass, manual top...

Ok maybe it is "worse" In true Porsche Fashion Less is More :D

Not worse, just different. I think the 718 just has to make sure that it is trying to be its own thing instead of trying to be a less expensive version of the Boxster.

agreed, I think its already off to a decent start, it will be getting its own unique powertrain for one. The body panels should be light weight, the interior simple and the styling lifted from a classic roadster.

:nerd:
I think that its good that the styling will be unique instead of looking exactly like the Boxster, but smaller. I think that, plus its own powertrain should do the job. I saw this roadster that uses tiny headlights like the old 718, and I wonder if Porsche could do something similar, or if it would be too different from their modern design language.

That design has already been stolen from the old shelby daytonas, dont think Porsche is interested in that ;)

I agree, it can't be seen as a worse boxter and must be pushed to become something much more unique than that.
The small tail lights were on the classic 718 though. That is what they would be channeling.

I sure hope so because it's a great look and something that would greatly help with making the connection to the older 718
they can't do that though. The original 718 was a race special based on the old 550's. There are federal regulations that stipulate tail lights must be certain sizes...
Just capture the spirit and styling queues of the original 718 would be enough. We all know the that universal safety regulations will dominate some of the styling but hopefully we will see enough of the past in the future model.
It doesn't have to be exactly like the original tail lights but even using it as the foundation for the new tail light would be great.
I'd still love to see the 718 spawn a hardtop as well. Just like the 987 ended up spawning a coupe and a rag top, I'd like to see 718 do the same...

The Miata mght do it after all :D
I'd love to see a rag top. along with some new and unique color combo's for it and the car.
I think that they will do like Alfa Romeo did for the 4C. First release the soft top, and then release the hard top later and make it more expensive.

The 718 already is a rag top, the roof may even be manual from what I've read...

You've got it backwards. Alfa released the coupe first, the roadster is still a year out. Besides thats the Porsche model of doing things, as was said earlier the boxster is a perfect example...

That would make sense as that seems like a cheaper way to go about it.
But manual... that's pushing it. They should at least make it motorized.
I think it makes more sense to release the soft top first and the hardtop second. If Alfa did it the other way around, I think that they got it backwards.

The manual roof is interesting. Definitely would save money, and it would also save a lot of weight so I could see it happening.
I also feel that a manual roof might take out the premiumness of a porsche, not sure what's best to do in this situation.

But in other threads we are talking about how the 718 might have manual windows. If there are manual windows then I would assume that there would also be a manual roof.
