Anyone have any advice regarding specific tire options for the winter for a 718 Cayman S. I have no interest in driving in ice and snow. I just want to be able to drive when temps drop toward freezing and below.

Tire markets and available models vary across the globe. Since you spelled it "tire" and not "tyre," I'm assuming you're in the US?

If so, I like the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. I believe it's only available in Porsche sizes in the 19" variety though, so it also depends what wheels you have (unless you plan on also getting separate winter wheels)

I just had the 18” Boxster wheels installed with winter tires on a CS. Suncoast has them on sale for $2500. My dealership price matched saving me the shipping. They aren’t the best looking wheel in the world in my opinion but they will get the job done for winter.

Best luck in your search.

I'm about to buy a set of winter tires for my 2018 Boxster, and am purchasing DUNLOP SP WINTER SPORT 3D, 235/45R18 94V in the front, 265/45R18 94V rear. Tire Rack offers a set, but be careful in that the rears are only available from 2013, and I, for one, don't intend to buy 5 year-old tires, even when used part-time, and would rather pay a little more for a new set.

I saw that ad and in fact I like those wheels. If you're willing, please post a pic with them installed on your car. I have 20" wheels now and can't imagine what it might look like going to 18's. What tires came mounted or did you pick? Thanks!

Greetings. I am purchasing a set of Porsche Tequipment 19" wheels with winter tires tomorrow. The Porsche 718 winter wheel and tire sets are apparently hard to find in the U.S. right now. I got lucky. My dealer had a set on display that he agreed to sell to me.

Park the car IN the garage . :)

Haha, fair observation but... the car was purchased to daily drive. So, five days a week it sits in an uncovered parking lot getting dirty. The couple hours it spends outside at night isn’t killing the car. Don’t worry as I do give the car a nice bath every Friday and have a car cover on it over the weekend. After all of this you are still asking why not just put it in the garage... two other cars sit in there that don’t get driven nearly as much. The last bay goes to the rest of the family for a golf cart, kids’ toys, and some lawn equipment.

Tie rack has winter tire and wheel packages starting around $2200 for the 718 CS.

Hi folks! First time poster to the 718 forum. Got the thumbs up from the wife to get a Cayman next summer/fall after finally sitting in some over the weekend :)

Regarding winter tires. Have any of you considered downsizing to 18" wheels and going a bit narrower on the tire size so you can fit an actual snow/ice tire rather than a winter performance tire? If driving on snow/ice the former is far superior. If it's just the temp change one's worried about then that's a different story.

Here in Colorado I'll be daily driving mine year round. So snow/ice performance will be important to me. Since a base model is in my future I know with certainty 18" wheels will fit. Here's what I've spec'd out on tirerack...

O.Z. Alleggerita HLT's

FRONT:
Size: 18x8 (O.E. Diameter)
Finish: Black Painted
Weight: 17.8 lbs.
Offset: 50mm

REAR:
Size: 18x9 (O.E. Diameter)
Finish: Black Painted
Weight: 18.6 lbs.
Offset: 43mm

...with...

Michelin X-ICE Xi3's

Front: 225/50R18
Rear: 245/50R18

If you take a look at the tire specs vs OEM (in 18") the section width, tread width, and diameter are all very similar. The rears would likely exhibit some stretch compared to stock, but should still fit the car without issue.

I’m very interested in actually snow/ice tires. There is a HUGE difference in ice traction from something like a Nokian R vs a PA4!

Later when I’m in my computer I’ll post the possibilities I’ve found.

So here is the CGTS on its 18" winter tyres. Pirelli Sotto Zero (M&S and mountain symbol). The centre caps are China's finest at a fraction of the tequipment price with a perfect fit. I couldn't bear having the black centre caps on the silver wheels.

On an additional note - the ride comfort on the 18" with the bigger side wall is astonishing. It's a different car. For the uninitiated, UK roads are somewhat neglected - see what I did there, very British ;), especially off the main roads. The car feels as planted still but there is a serenity to the feel of the car. The 20" rims are busy and the tyres loud. I am hoping it was the low ambient temperature which made the summer compound firmer and therefore more skittish.

Where did you find the center caps? Price? I am also unwilling to spend the cash on OEM center caps for the winter wheels. Have already purchased OEM once to switch to the colored crest center caps for the Carrera classics.

I found them on ebay and had a good experience with the seller https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

One of the 4 caps had a tooth broken. The seller replaced it with no quibbles. You can probably find them cheaper if you take the time to look. The quality of these caps is good. There is even a plastic protection film over the crest when they come out of the packaging. Hope this helps.

Good call on the Nokians. I did some digging this morning and they offer the same size I referenced above in their new for 2018 Hakkapeliitta R3. It sounds like the long term wear/performance is much better compared to the Ice-x or Blizzaks. They also offer a run flat variant if one is inclined to ride on cement tires ;)
