This thing finally has me curious enough to ask if anyone knows what the heck its used for?
Its likely burred in the manual somewhere but I wasn't diligent enough to suss it out.

Me too. Perhaps the designers thought, "but what if the driver needs access to the battery while stuck on the side of the road?" Mostly a solution looking for a problem. Personally I put it in the category with the car's cupholder.

Why do you say that? I think it’s an excellent touch of detail.
I can guarantee that if it wasn’t there there would be those wondering why there isn’t a clip to hold the cover up rather than having to lift it off and have it in the way on the floor or wherever
Of course I’m a fan of the cup holders too . . .

I suppose if the cover was hinged in the back then I would better appreciate the design. In any event, I recognize the convenience the strap offers even if it's rarely needed.

Now as for the cupholder, I knew I would get brushback!
