2017 Boxster Base - Shuddering / juddering under acceleration when cold.

Hi everyone, long time lurker and first time poster! I've owned a 2017 Base Boxster for three years - picked it up with 13,000 miles on the clock and have since done around 20,000 miles with no real issues apart from a water pump replacement last year. I've had it maintained by a local Porsche specialist in this time. It's a PDK but I've pretty much exclusively driven the car in manual mode. A few months ago I started noticing a slight judder under acceleration when the engine was cold - I'm always very gentle with the car before it's warmed up, but gently going from say 20-30 in 3rd would generate a subtle but noticable judder / shudder. As soon as the oil temperature is above the blue (around 76 degrees C), this behaviour stops completely and the car drives perfectly. This has got progressively worse over the past few weeks - the judder / shudder has become quite aggressive, and a couple of times I've been pulling away from a roundabout when cold and the car has really lurched away. Again, as soon as the car is warm the problem disappears, and I've had no warning light / error message in this time.

The Porsche specialist took it in yesterday - they collected it from me and were able to experience the problem on the way to the garage, but by the time they arrived the car was warm and they couldn't reproduce it anymore. It was due an eight year service anyway, which was carried out, but no faults were found and no fault codes were present (they have PIWIS 3), although they did note that the turbo actuator seemed stiff, so they cleaned and lubricated it. I've spent a lot of time on this forum in the past and am aware this is a weak point of the 2.0T engine. I was hoping that this would fix the issue but I took the car for a drive this morning, and the problem is definitely still there. I'm waiting for a call back from the garage but imagine the troubleshooting for this will be quite complex!

I've extensively searched this forum (and google), but can't find another instance of this problem / how it was resolved, Has anyone had / seen this issue before? I did find post about contaminated fuel, but this seemed like a one-off for the poster that rectified itself over time. I've only ever put Shell V-Power in the car and it feels like the problem has been around too long for this to be a possible explanation? Thank-you so much for any input.

Thank-you so much for the quick reply! I actually did this a couple of weeks ago after reading about it on this forum, sorry, should have mentioned it in the original post. I found two different sets of instructions which were broadly the same, but one of which mentioned pressing the accelerator half way through each 3 minute step. I tried both over a couple of days but it didn't seem to make any difference to the issue.

As I started reading this, I though clutch fluid. But at 8 years old and only 33k miles, I can't point to it with any certainty. The symptoms seem consistent with worn fluid.

At a bit over 30k miles, I haven't yet changed my clutch and gearbox fluids in my Boxster S, but I intend to do so soon. It's not difficult, just requires methodical procedures. If your tech has any how-to doubts, Jeff Richardson's Youtube videos are gold.

I guess the clutch friction material could be failing in some way, but at such low mileage, it would have to be from a defect, not normal wear.

Finally, @JoelG , please take time to complete your profile, lest we forget where you are and what you drive. :)

Thanks ReidMcT - I’ve put some more info in my profile 👍 I have wondered (and worried) about it being PDK related. The garage is a Porsche specialist in West Sussex - I didn’t buy the car from them (I spent months looking on Auto Trader for just the spec I wanted!) but I’d already chatted with them before buying the car, and decided that I wanted them to look after it once I pulled the trigger. They do everything Porsche from servicing to full engine rebuilds on current and vintage models - my Boxster is probably the least valuable car they maintain. I’ve got no doubt they’ll get to the bottom of it, but at the moment feels like a bit of a needle in a haystack. Do I remember reading that the PDK service is a 10 year item? Will see what they recommend. Thank you so much for your time, really appreciate your input 👍

Hi JoelG,
I had symptoms with my 82k 2107 718 S - Porsche Brooklands in Surrey diagnosed the problem as being the injector for cylinder 4 not working properly until the oil temp had reached 70C causing a misfire. They changed all four injectors (at a cost of ÂŁ2,300 inc vat) which has solved the problem. Might be worth mentioning this to the Porsche Garage you are using.
Fingers crossed this solves the problem for you mate.

Tony, thank you so much for this! The car has been at the garage for four weeks now but I’m reassured as they’ve come to the same conclusion as you. Initially they were able to get the car to report a problem with the coil pack in cylinder 2. They replaced this but the problem persisted. Further testing showed normal fuel / air mixture but misfiring when cold in cylinder 2. They’ve carried out compression testing (which is fine) and concluded it’s most likely the injector and the problem with the fuel not being atomised properly is hidden when the engine is hot as it ignites anyway. I’m hoping they’ll have it sorted soon. Will report back - thanks again and fingers crossed.

Hi all, sorry once again for the slow reply, but I finally got the car back this week and it’s working perfectly! To cut a long story short, the original Porsche Specialist I used correctly diagnosed the problem and ordered a new injector pretty quickly. This issue then became procuring some sort of specialist tools they needed to fit the new injector. Two months after dropping the car off, they were still unable to get hold of the these tools, and suggested I would be better off approaching an OPC with their diagnosis (and the part they’d ordered but been unable to fit). I called Mid-Sussex OPC who were very helpful. They took the car in, and although there was a slight wait whilst they obtained what I assume is the same tools (during which I was away for a couple of weeks anyway) I returned on Tuesday and the car was ready for collection.

Thanks everyone for your help (especially Tony with his similar experience). So pleased to have the car back!
