Hi Team - I've done the research, searched the 718 forums, scoured the internet on "break in" done properly. But as a first time Porsche owner (CGTS) I have some open questions that I'm hoping to get advice on.

My CGTS is PDK.

Here's what I've gathered:

1. Going to follow the manual for 2k miles under 4k RPM
2. Going to avoid long drives (i.e., highway stretches) at the same RPM level
3. Never use cruise control
4. Going to ensure the car is adequately warmed up before any drive
5. Drives will be a minimum of 20 miles
6. I will elect to do an oil change immediately after 2k miles and before going over 4k RPM
7. I will attempt to vary the miles between all gears and at various RPM levels (up to 4k RPM)

Here are my open questions, many of them rookie in nature:

1. Should I primarily be using Manual Mode to utilize all gears? (for example, should I stay in 2nd at around 30mph/3k RPM, 3rd at 40mph, and rinse/repeat for all gears).
2. Should I use Sport mode during break in? What are the benefits/negatives?
3. Are city miles more beneficial as they also allow for more braking, turning, start/stop?
4. What should I be listening or looking for during the break in process? My understanding is that engine noise will change as it is broken in, so I'll be paying attention throughout.

Thank you all in advance for sharing your wisdom and advice!

Welcome to the forum. Seems reasonable, except for the first number 4. These cars are meant to be driven immediately after startup. Just take it easy until the oil is up to temperature.

Don't worry about using all the gears. Driving gently in normal mode/automatic will have you in 7th before you know it.
Listening? Nothing special to listen for. The engine will make all sorts of little noises, even after you turn it off. Normal

Thank you OttawaSteve. I had read to try to break in all gears if possible, so on my drive last night I gave each gear a few miles around 2.5-3k RPM each. All very gentle miles, but if I was in normal mode/automatic I would have been primarily in 7th gear for the majority of the miles.

Any specific comments on the below?

Should I use Sport mode during break in? What are the benefits/negatives?
Are city miles more beneficial as they also allow for more braking, turning, start/stop?

Agree with Steve. The PDK will put you in the correct gear for the circumstances. Don't worry about it. Also agree about not idling the car until it's warm. Just get in and drive it but you also need to consider it's not just the engine you're breaking in, it's ALL the new components. Some will say you should get in and drive it as hard as you can right from the off, well that's not for me.

Engine and exhaust note will change as everything beds in. I wouldn't be overly concerned on doing an oil change at 2000 miles. I'm a firm believer that Porsche engineers know far more than me when it comes to when things should be done. Don't get me wrong, do the oil change if you want to but it's not a must do.

Opinions will be fast and flowing in a short while I'm sure but you should make your own decisions on the likes of oil changes and running in however, I would advise you read the manual. It gives you all the advice you need.

I took a 200 mile one way trip and then 200 miles back during the break in period. I just used manual mode shifted through the gears, varied my speed in each gear, and I also used Sport mode and Normal mode throughout. Normal mode will allow the oil temperature to get to a hotter temperature ensuring that oil flows well. Sport mode keeps the oil cooler so on a short trip the oil won't heat up as much. I also took trips in the city with the PDK in manual so I could reach 3500 RPM and other times I shifted sooner. I tried to break in the car using as many variables as possible.

Like everyone said, breaking in is not only for engine and transmission. The rest of the car needs to settle in as well. Leave suspension in normal, do not use manual pedal shift, let the PDK do its job. If you happen to be on the highway, u can just shift between 6th and 7th gear once every 10 to 15 mins. Turn off Auto Start Stop, leave exhaust valve in normal mode. Easy on the braking.

As you get closer to the magical 2000km, u will notice the exhaust note starts to open, your ride height settles, you will get better fuel economy (if you care), everything feel smoother. I did an oil change after breaking in because why not.. LOL..

With all due respect this voodoo for breaking in a mass produced car is silly.

You don't need to break in brakes. The street pads on your car don't need bedding in. Your ABS will work just fine from day 1.

You don't need to break in your suspension, I can't even imagine what and why you'd need to do so.

You don't need to break in your PDk. What do you think happens inside a transmission that needs breaking in?

And on the engine (I have the 4l GTS) try not to go above 4000 for a while is probably decent advice. But 2000 miles is ridiculous, in Europe I think they suggest 1500 KM. Just use a little common sense not to floor it and it will be fine.

I use Sport Mode almost all the time. Specifically during break-in, I found it kept the RPMs up list a little. I used paddles often but not all the time to change gears on my 1-2 hour drive to keep the RPMs from being within the same range all the time. My drive way is on a higher angle so I have to drive in slowly on an angle, I certainly used Sport Mode so the RPM's wouldn't be so low.

As for braking since someone mentioned it, no harsh or hard breaking for me. To each their own.

I also had oil change after break in.

As for noise? Yes there is a huge difference because of the exhaust note > 4k rpm. It's magical.

Making it to complicated
Keep it under 4 k rpm for first 1000
Miles, very RPM’s
Don’t floor it
Sport mode is fine based on the above
Oil change so soon is a waste
Follow the manual
What u hear is not relevant unless it’s obviously an issue
I’m on my 4 th PORSHE and that’s what I do
Also I pretty much do this for every car

All good advice above, but like to add:

  • Make sure you a warm up the engine on every drive. Oil up to 194 degrees (without x431 programming.)
  • Vary the engine rpm via gears or speed
  • I changed the oil at 2K miles and sent a sample for oil analysis as a base line.
  • You will notice that the exhaust opens up at 3K miles
