Did this 'hack' a couple of weeks back and can access Android Auto.

The latest MIB download (see link in original post) no longer requires the use of a laptop to connect to the car. Simply copy the files to a SD card (make sure you only copy the patch relevant to your unit in order to keep the file size down). The read me file in the download explains the process. The red engineering menu used to install the software is accessed by pressing the Media and Car buttons together and the green menu by pressing Tuner and Car. Remember to clear the error and install the patch before activating Android Auto - I didn't and got frustrated as to why the unit prompted to use device in AA mode but wouldn't give me the icon on the main screen. Once I realised my mistake, all works perfectly. I've kept the SD card I used in the slot, not sure if you need to once the flashing has completed but figured it doesn't hurt and at least I know where the card is should I need the backup.

Would say if you're of a nervous disposition then this may not be for you. There are several stages where the screen appears to freeze during the flashing process or goes blank for what seems like a long time while rebooting; therefore heed the warnings and don't be tempted to restart anything. Must admit there were a few moments where I thought I had bricked the headunit but my patience was rewarded.
I'm trying to do this but not able to get to the red menu. After I turn key to first spot (ie. accessories) do I press Media + Car for a certain duration before I enter the Red Menu? So far no luck... Thanks!

I don't believe you should focus on accessing the red menu. I was unable to in my research. Were you able to follow the steps in the initial post? At what point did you run into problems?

I am following the steps in your readme file. I've prepared the SD card and added the appropriate patch file into the patches directory. I've inserted the card in SD1 slot. How do I load it?

Thanks so much for your instructions!

Did you telnet into the PCM yet, once there you issue a console cmd to launch MIB. Then you can unlock GEM, and access it with the PCM button combination in the car.

I was hoping to do the PC free way... I only have a Chromebook but it does have Linux so I will try that if there is no way to do it without telnetting into the PCM.

I don't have a machine with an ethernet port... sigh.... For anyone who followed the README instructions here: MIB Solution :: Login how did you install MIB without a PC?

I've scanned this thread, but did not see a true step-by-step of the PC-free SD car upgrade. My car is a 2018 CB with CarPlay, so I should have the GPS antenna. I'm not clear what MIB and Maps I need for NAR. I'm more interested in Nav than in AA.

Anyone want to outline the process all in one reply for me?

Yeh the first post outlines the only known process for PCM cars. Short of a OEM process of course :)

Went through the experience today. I made sure I understood the instructions posted by EDUB at the top of this thread and also the instructions in the README file present in the 7z file I downloaded.

One thing that was confusing to me until Edub explained it was this: The README file is a generic file dealing with Harman MHI2(Q) units. EDUBs instructions are specific to the 718 head unit.

Went through the process of preparing the USB/RJ45 dongle, I used a Raspberry PI to flash the EEPROM unit, followed the instructions at the top verbatim.

Went through the process of connecting to the PCM via telnet, worked exactly as documented.

I ran 'Advanced Backup' and then 'Developer Menu activation', it took a while to reboot, but all was good. I then ran 'Install MIB into GEM'. All these things were executed from MIB within the telnet session.

I could not for the life of me launch GEM from the PCM using 'Car'+'Tuner'. I kept pressing the two and holding for 10 seconds and nothing would happen, it would just stay on the car screen if 'car' was pressed first and the tuner if 'Tuner' was pressed first.

UPDATE: I then did 'IFS-ROOT-Stage 2 flash patched image' from the MIB Telnet session so I could at least unlock Android Auto as that was an option in the menu.

My objective was to unlock Android Auto which I was able to do from MIV via telnet. So mission accomplished. I wanted to use the PCM GEM to unlock Navigation.

I had read somewhere that someone suggested 'Clear SVM error', so I did that since I figured it wouldn't hurt anything. After that, I tried triggering GEM from PCM and it worked! I unlocked navigation and upon PCM rebooting, I tried to launch it again and I couldn't.... wonder if I was just lucky in my timing of pressing both buttons simultaneously when I got it to work.

Well, I've done everything I wanted to do so I'm pretty grateful to all the folks who have gone on this path before me.

I wonder if what I documented is wrong. I think you need to flash the PCM, then install MIB and turn on Developer Menu option.

When you login to GEM now, do you see that developer menu is turned off again?

My order was certainly different... I did Developer Menu > Install MIB into GEM > failed to get into GEM > Flashed the PCM via telnet MIB > Unlocked Android Auto.

I then did Clear SVM > tried launching GEM > It worked!! > Enabled Navigation

Upon reboot, tired launching GEM > failed 3/3.

Mission accomplished. Disconnected everything.

This is in GEM right? So basically I have to get the button press to work first? Wish me luck!
I did manage to get the key combo just right and was able to get to GEM again. This time I looked into the various menus and then finally just rebooted the PCM.

I do think your instructions work, I'm just not coordinated enough to simultaneously press both buttons for 5s.

Well, then I think I'll drop it. While I could certainly handle the long process (I'm a retired Linux sysadmin), I have no interest in AA since I use iPhones, and while I could see some value to having on-board Nav, I don't really need it with the wired CarPlay my car has. Not worth the expense to buy a USB/Ethernet dongle just for that.

Ah. Well that kinda stinks but compared to CarPlay, Porsche nav kinda sucks anyways. Only good for when out of cell coverage areas. Someone on the discord channel for MIB said it should work but not sure if he’s an expert or just another user.
