I don’t know how to respond to this. You say ‘I bought the Cayman to experience a more pure sports car and expected what I have got I suppose’ - What does that mean?

Maybe I missed it but you haven’t explained what you don’t like / ‘get’ / feel? I agree with others that until it’s run in and you can drive it properly it’s unfair to judge. If you don’t like pushing a car and exploiting the capabilities of the chassis then it may not be the car for you?

The Cayman or Boxster is an A or B road car, take it round a mountain pass or coast route and you will see it’s worth and appeal. An F type is a GT car, the Porsche is not and if that is what you are looking for it will disappoint you.

use your Cayman in the manner it was designed for, and it will reward you.

I have a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 6-speed and a 2018 BMW 540d M-Sport. I’ve only driven/ridden in a F type a couple of times, but it felt like it had more in common with my BMW than my Cayman. Front engine, 4000 pounds, automatic transmission, tons of torque, luxury interior. None of these are bad things, but as others have said, the F is not a visceral and engaging lightweight mid engine sports car. Not even close to the same driving engagement IMO. So if you made the wrong choice for you in replacing the F with a Cayman, count your blessings that you can sell it and come out even or ahead.

Hope it works out. Cheers!

Another option to consider is the 992, which in some ways splits the difference between a heavy GT focused car like the F type and a more focused drivers car like the 718.

The only problem is that the 992 still has a fair amount of road noise, which may not suit the OPs needs.

I’m writing this after a great fun pre-dinner drive in my own 718. It’s not a perfect car at all, and I did have to adjust a few things to make it fit my own taste, but it definitely is a driver’s car. If get it to a driver’s road, it is very fun.

I’ll join the chorus by saying I think the Cayman needs to be hustled a bit to be initially appreciated. Nothing extreme. It’s a bit too competent to drive leisurely at first which can make it seem boring. Once you have an opportunity to experience its satisfying mid-engine rotation in the turns, and it’s general agility, in a hustle, then I think you’ll have more fun.

Once you learn how to make it fun in a light hustle, it will be easier to coax the smiles at a more leisurely pace, too.

This was my experience.

I'm 2 months into ownership as well and I'm still in the break in period. The handling is unbelievable and the low end torque is amazing. I live in fly-over-flat-land-utopia and I still find the handling amazing because there are a few twists and turns nearby that make me smile. The 718 doesn't nose dive plowing through a turn. The flatness of the rotation entering and leaving a turn with a mid-engine is exhilarating. It's a level of control that I've never felt before. It's like I've opened up a new world and I can't wait to explore the twisties that blanket the hills of Missouri. Perhaps some day I'll carve out some time to carve up the canyons in Utah properly.

Bongo, I too agree that it isn’t understood what exactly are your dislikes or what are you disappointed from.
I can tell you I had a similar experience but I knew exactly what disappointed me. I bought a new cayman t delivered last July. My main disappointment was the sound of the engine. For me it lacked soul and excitement. Too monotonous. I also understood very fast i miss the open top element. So… after agonizing for 5 months I traded it in for a new boxster gts 4.0 to be delivered in a month or so from today. I believe as others noted here first impressions are usually spot on usually not always. You didn’t buy such a great and expensive car to be disappointed but to be thrilled and if you are not you probably need to make a change. By the way in every other aspect the cayman was superb i loved the torque i loved it’s handling i loved its looks inside and out.

Reading this post has me realizing the unexpected benefit of buying used (car only had 7k miles). Not being able to rev the 2.0 6MT during breakin would take a lot of fun out of driving this car. 🙂 Maybe after the break in you will fee a little different, but I agree with the other posts as well.

Well I won't rip into you ;) for that brain fart, since I suspect you made out financially, or at least broke even on the trade.

....But.....the 718 4-cylinders have been around for nearly half a decade. EVERYONE who knows how to spell Porsche knows what they sound like. For you to have ordered a Cayman T and then been disappointed in the sound enough to trade it for a Boxster GTS 4.0 seems at odds with your spelling ability. I mean c'mon, you went from a hardtop Cayman to a convertible Boxster. That's just a wee bit different than a sound motivated switch. Hopefully you don't end up trading the Boxster for another Cayman because you discover its trunk won't hold a set of golf clubs. :sneaky:

Sorry, I had a long week, so take these jabs in the good humor intended!

BTW, regarding SOUND: I went from a 2014 Cayman S w/o sport exhaust to a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0. Yes, the 4.0 sounds better than the old 981's 3.4. But still not as aggressive or impressive as my former 2005 911S's 3.8 liter w/sport exhaust. That had the pops and crackles in downshifting that really sounded great. And both the 997S and my Cayman GTS 4.0 sound a bit wimpy when my neighbor fires up his 991.2 GT3 6-speed and wakes up the dead. That is the best sounding Porsche this side of a Carrera GT, bar none. What I find most appealing about the 4.0 in the GTS over the 2.0/2.5 turbo 4's is the nature of the free revving engine. Some prefer the low end torque of a turbo. I understand, I have a 540d with a turbodiesel 6 that has 457 ft lbs starting at ignition (and a 5,500 rpm redline). But for my sports car, I prefer free revving naturally aspirated engine the whizzes up to red-line. I'd consider trading my GTS 4.0 for the 500hp 9,000 rpm GT4 RS, but alas, it doesn't come with a 6-speed manual and that's a non-starter for me.

I guess I lack humor in the sense you seem to define it. In its real meaning I lack none. Seems you had a bad week not only long. Why is it so hard to accept other peoples views and opinions. Looks like my opinion on the sound of the flat 4 hit your soft spot not to mention the mere fact that you refuse to accept the reasons for wish I decided to trade in when you don’t even know me. now that’s really amusing. I hope next week works better for you.

Calm down. Clearly I didn't do as well as I intended with the "good humor" caveat. And you have my utmost acceptance of your opinions, even if we both may have different ones.

Here's an honest 2 questions though: (1) Did you really not know what the Cayman T 2.0 sounded like before you ordered it and (2) Would you have traded for a GTS 4.0 trade if, under less favorable market conditions, it would have cost considerably more? Just curious, no "judgement" intended. Really.

Fwiw, if I take the clubs out of the bag, they totally fit in my boxster's trunk. 😜
How many clubs do you have to take out? Just the driver? Other woods/hybrids? And when you take them out, do those clubs still fit in the trunk out of the bag, or do you have to put them in the passenger seat.

Good question. Most of the time my clubs live at the course, but I had them home for a few weeks and wanted to test it out. I didn't try to leave any clubs in the bag, but it was not difficult. I just took them all out of the bag, laid them flat (even the driver fits), and put the bag on top. The trunk closed with no issues.

Apologies accepted and appreciated. truth to be said I had a long week also. To the point you have good questions and excuse the long answer: the last time i drove a porsche before the short test drive the dealer gave me in a boxster 2.0 with him driving (it was a second hand to be sold they didn’t have insurance for me) was in 2015 i took my son to a porsche travel experience we drove a 911 targa 4 gts. Before that on a boxster like 30 years ago (im 57). I read and heard on YouTube the reviews on the flat 4 sound but didn’t actually drive one nor did i drive the 4.0 gts. The dealer didn’t have any test cars at all. During the 10 minute test drive on the 2.0 I remember my remark to the dealer that the engine is “not bad” in other words it didn’t impress me but was ok but since the whole deal was a dream come true for me i was so excited by the mere fact im at last buying a porsche and a new one I thought the sound issue won’t impair my enjoyment and another important fact the gts 4.0 was way out of the budget I decided on otherwise no brainer for me i would have bought the gts for sure.
Eventually i was dissatisfied very soon from delivery after the initial hype lowered and then i made the big mistake of letting a fellow local porsche club member let me drive his 4.0 then i was really “shocked” what a difference in engine sound imo.
one more thing the car for me was a big issue financially. here in my country all cars cost double and more than in Europe or usa because of 100 % import tax so I didn’t allow myself to decide on a gts budget. my wife almost “killed” me anyway 😉😉 otherwise i would have gone for the gts as mentioned.
The engine was the main trigger and then I also felt that im lacking the open top element so here you’re right there was another issue besides the engine although that was the main.
By the way I wanted a boxster in the first place but decided cayman in order not to be too flashy my line of work doesn’t coincide perfectly with the porsche sports car owner image. The whole thing was a big dismay instead of being thrilled i was upset. So after agonizing for 5 months and after making sure my wife doesn’t divorce me 😉 I decided to make that additional financial effort now especially since ev is coming(last chance to buy the gts 4.0) and fix the “broken” deal and the decisions i made and go full out with what I really want and get the bgts 4.0 and this time since I didn’t want to find myself disappointed again as you implied i didn’t compromise with the color. instead of white, my cayman color, i went with shark blue!! I decided “f… what everybody or anyone will say” in my work place! You only live once and im not a spring chicken 😉
By the way the i paid 170000 dollars for the cayman t that i optioned mildly with pdk guards red seat belts and heated gt steering wheel since the t comes with all the goodies built in and for the gts paid 220000 also similarly optioned for the same reason. I think that also answers your second question. By the way im a na engine sound fan. The 911 gt3 (not the turbo) is what I would by if i had the money.. Thats the story… by the way from a different thread I understand you live in the dc area. I was practically brought up in chevy chase md when my father was allocated to work there.

Ouch, sorry to hear about the 100% import tax.
If it helps a little, Shark Blue is a phenomenal color that is very close to the $12,600 paint cost my neighbor paid for PTS Mexico Blue. See photo that I just snuck of his GT3....hopefully he's not lurking on these 718 forums. I was toggling between Shark Blue and Carmine Red, but because it was a new color for 2022 models, there were no Shark Blues of any Porsche model that I could actually see in person. So I went with Carmine. I'm happy, but you will be really happy!
Congratulations on your upcoming car!
All the best.

P.S. I live in Chevy Chase.

Thanks. Truly can’t wait since the trade in was made 4 months ago. Carmine is epic too. My two cents on sports cars is “what’s the point in having one if it doesn’t stand out!” Surreal you live in chevy chase what a coincidence ☺☺ That place has a warm spot in my heart. I went to and graduated from bcc high.

An F type is a GT car, the Porsche is not and if that is what you are looking for it will disappoint you.
It is true that the 718's are not meant to be GT cars but I have to throw out my own impressions, and the impression of my sweetie/DW too. Our Cayman is far and away the most comfortable car we've ever taken on a long trip. Except for the somewhat high road noise on some types of pavement there isn't much one could improve. JMOO of course.

For you to have ordered a Cayman T and then been disappointed in the sound enough to trade it for a Boxster GTS 4.0 seems at odds with your spelling ability.
I won't comment on spelling, since anyone here can see that I cna't tpye. But I will point out one thing about the sound of a Cayman's exhaust. When you are inside the car you don't hear much. Stand outside when someone fires up the engine and you will take an involuntary step backwards. When it fires up the sound can be startlingly powerful. It moves a LOT of air like a thumping V8. With a Boxster you can at least fire it up with the windows open and the top down. With a Cayman you don't necessarily open the windows so you never hear just how assertive it can be. JMOO of course.

Agreed that the Caymans sound is baffled for the driver when its windows are closed. But my neighbor’s GT3 will cause our bed to shake from 50+ yards away, even when our bedroom windows are closed.

The 718 is not uncomfortable, I have covered some serious mileage in mine in single trips. But it’s definitely not a GT car, its simply not refined enough to be considered as such, the road noise is a large part of this.
